May 16-20 is National Small Business Week. From their website:
Every year since 1963, the President of the United States has proclaimed National Small Business Week to recognize the contributions of small businesses to the economic well-being of America. As part of National Small Business Week, the U.S. Small Business Administration recognizes this special impact made by outstanding entrepreneurs and small business owners. In 2011, National Small Business Week will honor the estimated 27.2 million small businesses in America. Small businesses are major contributors to the strength of the American economy. More than half of Americans either own or work for a small business. They also create 60-80 percent of new jobs in the country. Small businesses drive innovation, create 21st century jobs and increase U.S. competitiveness.
If you follow my blog, you know I’m a huge advocate and supporter of small businesses. So in the spirit of Small Business Week, I’m going to highlight a local small business every day this week.
First up is Avon News in Avondale, PA. They are on State Road, just off of 41 in Avondale. Family owned and the women who own it are great. They sell Hallmark items, Melissa & Doug, lottery tickets, newspapers, magazines, small jewelry, candles, other gift items, wrapping paper & invitations/thank you notes & much more. You never really know what cute little find you’ll come across in there. Shopping there is great, not just because you’re supporting the local economy, but it’s good for you too. How?
Well, you know when the lottery jackpots go way up and you see people waiting in line for hours? Doesn’t happen at Avon News! Remember when kids couldn’t get enough of Webkinz, Japanese erasers and Silly Bandz? Avon News always has the latest kids’ fad items in stock. Make prior arrangements and they’ll hold newspapers for you, so you can always be assured of getting them. They get the Daily news on Thursdays, which carries Smartsource. They have very cute handbags by Maddie B (very similar to Vera Bradley) at decent prices.
Stop by and pay a visit, tell them I sent you. Actually, I’m in there quite a bit, we may just run into each other.
