Movie Review and Trailer: The Vow (may include spoilers!)

A few weeks ago, I was invited to the Philadelphia area premiere of The Vow. It was hosted in part by Ben 95.7 FM; I’ve been on their Real Mom Radio. I’m not much of a movie buff, really I’m not. Name any popular movie that the whole world has seen, and I haven’t seen it. Like, I haven’t seen any of the Austin Powers movies or any of the Bourne ones. I just never make it a priority to go to a movie. We get them to watch at home, and then I get sidetracked with laundry and whatnot…..but now I’m starting to ramble.

I was excited about going because I really wanted a night out with friends (many of the Philly Social Media Moms were invited) and it was a chick flick, and well, it was free! So I grabbed my friend Laura and we went.

In a few words, I really, really enjoyed it. Going in, I sort of expected it to be hokey and corny…..like 50 First Dates. Mind you, I’ve never seen that movie, but that’s what I was expecting. It starts out with the two lead characters being madly in love newlyweds and they get into a car accident. Paige (Rachel McAdams) gets amnesia and can’t remember the previous 5-6 years of her life…….the years with her husband. However, she can remember everything prior to that and the story unfolds into some family drama, she was estranged from her family and so on.

Channing Tatum is pretty easy on the eyes, but honestly, throughout the whole movie, I just felt so bad for him. It’s also hard to not really dislike Paige at some points, and I had to keep reminding myself that she did suffer a traumatic brain injury, so it wasn’t entirely her fault she was being a bitch. For the most part, she is not only beautiful, but really really likable in the movie. Likable like when you first saw Kimberly Williams in “Father of the Bride.” Remember that? I found both of their characters to be very believable. They are portrayed as city hipsters, and while watching you just want to be cool like them. I did find Paige’s family to be a bit phony and too staged, but maybe they wanted them to be over the top.

Now, at the end of my movies, I like resolution and closure. I wanted Paige to get her memory back, fall deeply in love with him again and be mad at her family. I’ll just tell you that’s not how it works out. Stay for the end credits–they do show a photo of the family that this story is based upon, with a follow up to their true story as well.

I’d say it’s a must see. You’ll have to gauge how your hubby or significant other is about chick flicks, this definitely fits in that category, though not as extreme as Steel Magnolias or something. And Steel Magnolias…….I’ve never seen it, I just know it’s a movie people make fun of for being too feminine.
