Good news for those of us with tick problems

One of my little guys with one of the puppies, last year. Yes, the puppy is intent on destroying Uniqua.

Where I live, the ticks are really, really bad this year. Really bad. Last evening, I saw what looked like a gray jellybean waddling slowly across the floor. It was a disgusting, bloated, still alive tick. Blech. Blech.

Last week, for my weekly newspaper column, I focused on ticks. But there is good news!

The only really proven thing (imho) to work at preventing/killing ticks is fipronil. Say what you want about not wanting to expose kids or pets to chemicals, I don’t care, I use it. It works. And I fully believe it is safe. It is also expensive.

But, I heard about a product, and I wanted to look into it, so I did. I asked a friend who is a veterinarian about PetArmor. It claims to work as well as Frontline and has the same active ingredient-fipronil. This was his response, when I asked if it would work the same as Frontline:

Yes, in theory. Merials patent on Frontline has expired…so this is basically generic frontline. It has just come on the market to my knowledge…so I have no had experience with it or heard if it works as well. It is the same drug though so it should.

And guess what? It is MUCH cheaper than Frontline. With three 100lb dogs, this stuff gets awfully expensive for me, awfully quick! I am really excited about this, this is going to be huge savings for our household.

  1. Is it just for dogs and where did you find it? We have a cat that spends a lot of time outside, and I’m sure he’s bringing in the occasional tick.

The image of the jelly bean walking across the floor – I’m wishing that one away a lot!

  2. I just saw your post over at Philly Social Media Moms : ) You made me laugh about the denim capris! I have been noticing ticks all over this year. CRAZY! Wishing you all the best with your project : )

  3. Thanks so much- we live an area with woods behind us and our cats are indoor/outdoor. I have the same tick problems you seem to have- I hate those “gray jelly beans” And the scream my girls let out if they find one- uggg..
I will have to give this stuff a try- thanks for the heads up!

  4. There are pet forums that do not have glowing views about this. Saving a few bucks isn’t worth endangering my pet, so I’ll sit this one out until it has been around for a while and I can see what happens.

“I really wouldn’t recommend the product personally. Reason is because my vet, as well as another I know, have requested MSDS from the company on multiple occasions so that they can answer questions pet owners might have. The company has outright refused to provide this information. In addition, I have tried contacting the company and they have done nothing but give me the run around and not answer my questions. Personally, I would rather spend more on a product from a company I know I can trust.

ETA: Our vet said that while it is marketed to be the same as Frontline Plus, it may or may not be. If the inert ingredients are different, it is entirely possible that the product will not work the same. Since they refuse to share this information, there is no way to be sure.”

“I wanted to add that Pet Armor is NOT the same as Frontline Plus. It’s a generic equivilant to regular Frontline. Frontline Plus is the one that kills all lifecycles of fleas. Regular Frontline, and Pet Armor. just kills adult fleas. Personally, I’ll just stick with Frontline Plus.”

  5. Well, I mean, people take ibuprofen and acetominophen all the time, rather than their name brand counterparts. This really is no different. And I just take everything I read on pet boards with a grain of salt. The MSDS is very easily located with an online search. And it just makes me wonder why someone would even request that. I mean, the patent ran out, and as happens when all patents run out on pharmaceuticals, generics hit the market.

Barb-I added links to Amazon. I thought I had them in there before but they had disappeared.
