No coupons? No problem!

Here is this week’s “No coupons? No problem!” post. This is a post where you can still look & act like a supercouponer, without all that clipping.

My pick for this week would definitely be the Hallmark offer at Giant. Buy any three Hallmark cards and get a coupon for $5 off your next order. The $0.99 cards are working towards this deal, so you can spend less than $3, and get $5 back. I also added some details as to how you can roll that oyno catalina into some Scott products and back again.

Walgreens is a good choice this week too. Go check out the GUM flossers, the ones that are $2, get $2 back. Buy them, then spend the $2 on the Right Guard deodorant–which is $2.99 with $2 back. Now, you still have $2 in RRs, two items….check out the other razors and P&G cleaning items that are on sale and offering RRs back. Just don’t forget the rules of Walgreens. It can be complicated, but once you learn them, it’s a fun store.

Have fun & let us know what you get.

Giving Walgreens a second glance-May 1-7

A few things at Walgreens are catching my eye, since I gave the ad a second look. Plus I picked up my inserts today, and sometimes things don’t click for me until I see both the ad and the coupon inserts in my hand.

Yesterday’s Red Plum had bogo Right Guard coupons and it’s bogo at the store. Free! Well, almost free for me. I think the coupon value is only good up to $4.49 and last time the RG stuff was $4.79. Still, $0.30 for two body washes or deodorants is a great price.

There’s a Foot Locker GC offer when you buy Gatorade, and Gatorade coupons in yesterday’s paper.

Lipton Tea 12 packs-that’s a good price for those, and it’s $2 off 2, or about $8 for two twelve packs.

The RR deal on the P&G cleaning items (page 5 of ad, top middle). It will work on sale prices, not shelf prices, but if you have the home mailer coupons for things like Swiffer, good deals to be had. Prices not listed in flyer, I’ll check it out tomorrow.

Movie ticket offer-buy 6 of the candies listed at $15. Use three of the $2/2 coupons from yesterday’s paper, pay $9. Get $7 back towards a movie ticket. Good deal for movie goers.

The Mead and 3m stuff I mentioned last week-don’t forget the 3m printables.

Use the yesterday’s Noxzema razor coupons and the razor deal is a small moneymaker. Razors are $3.99, use $2 coupon, pay $1.99 get $3 back!

LOTS and lots of bogo items and remember, Walgreens will allow you to use a coupon on each item. Schick Hydro, Speed Stick, Olay are just some of the brands that are bogo and have good coupons out right now.

I have $10 in RR to spend by Wednesday. My plan is this:

4 Right Guard items-4.79 each, on sale bogo, I have two bogo coupons; will cost me about $0.60

1 Noxzema razor-3.99, I have one $2 coupon, cost $1.99

1 Soleil item at 5.99, I have one $3 coupon, cost $2.99

1 Fusion razor, $9.89, I have $5 home mailer coupon, $4.89

$0.60+$1.99+$2.99+4.89=appx $10.50; will pay with $10 RR, don’t need any fillers because of bogo items. Get back $3 for Noxzema, $2 for Soleil, $4 for Fusion.

Did you know this about the big box/mass retailers?

Several years ago, big box stores or your mass retailers began a new marketing technique. It was to partner with a well-known designer or brand name, and then they’d produce a B-Line of merchandise to be sold in the big box store. I believe Target was one of the first, in partnering with Isaac Mizrahi. There are now dozens and dozens of examples of this. Working in a consignment shop, it’s very difficult at times to keep a straight face and not roll my eyes out of my head, when I have a consignor in front of me insisting “But it’s Vera Wang!” when I’m pricing her item lower than what she wants. Yes, there is a Vera Wang name on this item. But make no mistake, this is not the real deal–this is her line from Kohl’s.

If I like an item and feel it’s a good value for the money, I don’t really care what label is on it. I’m constantly raving about the Wonderkids line of clothing from Kmart. I love it and it holds up very well. But I hate for people to think they’re getting a real Vera Wang or real Dana Buchman (QVC) when it is in fact the B-Line of stuff.

Did you know that this idea extends beyond clothing? We recently had to replace our very old grill and in doing research, learned that the Weber grills you’re getting at Lowe’s are (imo) a lesser quality grill than one you’d get at a licensed dealer. The main thing we found was that the big box ones were NOT made of a stainless steel interior, which is very important for longevity of the grill. When I mentioned this fact to my dad, he said “Yeah, John Deere does it too. That’s why you have to go to a John Deere dealer, not the big box stores for one.” He said the same for tires too. If you get name-brand tires at some of the big box stores, chances are they are lesser quality and you will get lesser mileage than if you go to a regular mechanic that uses a distributor. Same goes for Kohler stuff–you’re not getting the same high quality, fancy faucet you see on tv; you’re getting a specially designed line just for Home Depot or Lowe’s.

Anyone who follows my blog and knows me will tell you, Smart Spending is not just about finding the cheapest items you can find. It’s about all over quality, value, longevity and price. It’s why I hate clothing from Old Navy. Sure, it’s trendy and fashionable and cheap. But it’s crap and looks even more crappy after just a few washings. I think it’s a better idea to spend a bit more and get more wear out of an item.

We found a grill dealer that we liked, based out of West Chester. At first glance, we spent more on a grill than most people probably would (and no, I’m not saying how much!). But, we honestly expect that we will not have to replace this grill again in our lifetimes. So overall, I think it’s smarter spending. We supported a local business, got something that has extreme value and longevity which is better for our bank accounts, and better for the environment. If you’re getting a new grill every 5-10 years or so, that could be 5-7 grills in a landfill for one lifetime.

Anyway, I’m rambling, but my point is…..I know I’m going to try to be much more aware of the brand names sold at stores, for ALL product commodities.

On the plus side, we’re very happy with our new grill!

DG printables-$2 Huggies & 25% summer stuff

There’s no Dollar General weekly ad this week, so I’m not doing matchups. They have changed up their assortment of printables. Included now are a $2 Huggies printable, and usually these are separate from the other printables you find online. In other words, even if I’ve recently printed the others, I’m usually still able to print this one. And, there’s a store coupon good until 4/29 for all summer tableware & drinkware. I don’t know why we wouldn’t be able to stack this with any other Hefty/Chinet/Dixie mfr coupons we have–that stuff should be included since it’s summer bbq season.
