Target toy clearance

Looks like tomorrow will be the day for the big Target toy clearance. In past years, it has been the last Thursday in July. Several couponers have been in at various locations this week and asked, or reporting in that all of the clearanced toys are grouped in one location now. I won’t be going there tomorrow, but if there is something that you saw at 30% or 50% off, I would expect it to be 75% off tomorrow. Some of the items that moms have been watching are: Bakugan stuff, Lego, Barbie, Matchbox, some coupe car thing and some Fisher Price Lion thing for little ones (babies).

If you go, good luck! I hope what you want is still there, I love getting a great deal.

Acme deal-maybe not as good as we thought

I mentioned the Acme deal last night, now I’ve had time to look it over. I posted last night–it’s buy $30 worth of P&G, get $10 back to spend in the “gift card mall.” Sounds great, because I’m sure there are transactions that we could all make up that would get us to the $30 threshhold on shelf prices, then down to near or below $10 after sale prices and coupons.

Here’s the catch–

It appears, for now anyway, that all gift cards in the “gift card mall” start at $25 and go up from there. There are no generic gift cards out there, for say either Acme or a gas station, that are located in the “gift card mall.”

So, what this means–
Either we’re going to have to hope that cashiers don’t notice and just let us pass through.
Or we can convince cashiers and/or mgmt that the Acme cards should be included.
Or, they allow us to stack the $10, therefore we can do multiple transactions of P&G stuff, then they allow us to get a $50 gift card.

If you are a frequent customer of the stores/restaurants that are included in the “gift card mall,” then this still could be a good deal for you.

Stay tuned and I’ll post as soon as I know.

What to buy now, what you should wait for

Retailers and manufacturers aren’t that creative when it comes to deals. They pretty much run the same deals, year after year. Once you start doing this bargain hunting regularly, you recognize patterns. I still get surprised once in a while, like the “free” backpacks at Office Max & Staples this week, but by and large it’s the same old deals.

What you should be on the lookout for now:
Summer clearance: anything summer–clothing, swimwear, swim diapers, pool toys, sunscreen, BBQ tools, patio stuff, grills & grilling accessories, beach towels, insect repellent, sandals, flip flops, self-tanners, sunglasses, hats, beach totes and outdoor play items like kiddie pools, swing sets and sandboxes.
As the summer winds down, these items are only going to get cheaper and cheaper. They’re cheap now and will really be marked down after Labor Day. You have to decide how long you’re willing to wait out an item or how badly you need it.
The plastic melamine dish items are as low as $0.38 each now at Target. I’ve gotten swim diapers for a dollar or two a pack at the end of the season. And remember, most stores allow for coupons on clearance items.
Also, most of your big drug stores like CVS and Walgreen’s do two cosmetic floor resets each year-one in the summer and one right after the holidays. Look for clearanced cosmetics.
Other stores like Kmart, Target and Walmart will also be clearancing out toys to make room for holiday merchandise.

Back to school-
Retailers and manufacturers will be offering many promotions on back to school items. This includes–backpacks, school/office supplies, some cleaning items like anti-bacterial wipes for the classrooms, paper and ink/toner. Your grocers will be offering deals too–think lunch boxes. Anything that goes in a lunch box-prepackaged snacks, granola bars, peanut butter, juice boxes and pudding cups. And every year Kellogg’s does a big “fuel for school” promo on their breakfast items. Look for special displays that usually contain rebates and coupons in your local store. Also, for the big names like Kellogg’s, look for “specially marked packages” that contain deals like movie passes or Playstation points. If you’re going to buy X number of something anyway, might as well get a rebate or movie pass as part of the deal. Both Kellogg’s and Keebler have these going on right now.

You may want to read up on freezing and canning and make the most of the summer produce that is available now.

In August, all the office stores–Office Max, Staples, Office Depot, Rubinstein’s–they all will do their teacher days as well as lots of promos with 100% return on your investment. This week Office Max and Staples are both offering 100% back on the purchase of a backpack. Office Max allows you to get two. Remember, the rewards you get back, while it will be 100% of what you spent, it is only good in that particular store. Not a good deal if you don’t need anything. But a great deal if you need paper or ink anyway.

Lastly–sad to say, but Halloween and Christmas are right around the corner, at least as far as retailers are concerned. So unless you absolutely need it, don’t buy candy or baking items. Those things will be cheap very soon.

As always, remember the rule: is it a great price or a great deal? You’ll see lots of things at a great price, it’s only a great deal if you need/use the item!

Yay! A week to get excited about Acme!

Ok, so this Friday starts a new flyer and new sale week at Acme. I saw a preview on hcw and it looks very promising.

For those of you not interested in getting catalinas and rolling them into the following week’s deals, this may be for you. The deal is, purchase $30 worth of Procter & Gamble products, get a $10 “on your next gift card mall” purchase. So I’m assuming, hopefully I’m right, that you know all those gift cards they sell on the racks there–I’m assuming for each $30 transaction, you get $10 to spend there. Now, those cards start at $25, so hopefully there won’t be any restrictions about stacking the $10 rewards. But really–VS, Cabelas, Olive Garden, Staples….how awesome to have our choice of where to spend it!

Remember, going into these transactions–that these deals work off of shelf prices not sale prices, with the exception of knockdown. So, for example, the shelf price for a big pack of Bounty is 14.99, sale price 9.99. So count the 14.99 towards the $30, but you’ll only pay 9.99, and then of course you can coupon or catalina on top of that.

I see many possibilities where we can pay less than $10 to get our $10 reward.

I’ll look at what is posted on hcw more closely tomorrow. There’s also $0.05 roll of Vivas headed your way if you have the $0.85/1 coupon. Kraft mac & cheese, plus tuna at an awesome price. My husband was just asking me the other day-Don’t we have any tuna? To which I replied, Nope, no one has wanted to give it away recently.

If you don’t have any Procter & Gamble inserts, don’t despair. New ones will be out Sunday, plus some printables available.
