Budget Cutting: Car/Home Insurance

When was the last time you got a quote on your insurance? If it has been over 6 months, check again.  Here’s my story.

I absolutely LOVED our car insurance. We were with them approximately 8 years. Yes, I said WERE.  For 2 years (3 years ago) I faithfully searched for quotes every 6-9 months. Our company was always the cheapest. I gave up looking about 1.5 years ago because it is slightly time-consuming and tiring.

One year ago I was in a car accident. Our mini van was totalled and we were so grateful for accident forgiveness. Our policy didn’t change….until 6 months later. It went up $15 so no big deal. Prices change sometimes, right? We then, for the first time in our life, got a second vehicle. I was a bit surprised at how much basic coverage with no collision cost for a vehicle that is considered worth about $500 but since my car accident I figured there was no point shopping around.  Well, the other day we called to add renter’s insurance.  The rate they quoted was double what they quoted shortly before my accident.

Our policy is almost up and my husband decided to call someone he has spoken with through work just to see what the rates would be to change. Even figuring in the accident, we will save $300 a year!!!

Make the call, fill out an online quote, you just never know where you COULD be saving money.

Here are a few links you can check out to see if they can save you money, and no I am not saying where we were or switched to. I can honestly say that if our rates weren’t so much higher we would have stayed where we were.

Scrumptious Pineapple Carrot Muffins

In the next few days I will be doing a review and giveaway of Tropical Traditions Organic Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil. For now, I am going to tempt you with a recipe for delicious muffins that I used the coconut oil in.

I used a recipe I found in a church fundraiser cookbook I picked up somewhere.  The recipe I “used” is, well, not the recipe I ended up making since I changed so many ingredients so I gave it a new yummier name. Believe me, the other name was lackluster.

1 1/2 cups stone ground whole wheat (you can use white)
1 cup rolled oats (quick would be fine)
1/2 cup raw sugar + 1 Tablespoon molasses (go ahead, 1/2 cup brown sugar is fine but not quite as moist)
1 Tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/3 cup raisins
1 – 20 oz. diced or crushed pineapple, UNDRAINED
1 large carrot, grated ( approximately 1 cup)
1/2 cup milk
1/3 cup coconut oil, melted (more on this in a day or 2)
2 eggs, slightly beaten

Preheat oven to 400.

Mix dry ingredients in one bowl.

Mix wet ingredients in a separate bowl.

Mix the dry and wet ingredients until just incorporated.

Put in muffin tins and bake – approximately 20 minutes.

Let set 10-15 minutes before eating.

Makes 18.

Be careful. They are incredibly addicting. My kids and I all love them and will definitely make them exactly the same way next time.  Stayed tuned for my review of Tropical Traditions Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil.

PlumDistrict: 50% Off Natural/Organic Kid’s Bath Products

Have you signed up for PlumDistrict yet?  If not, sign up HERE to get $5 off your first PlumDistrict DEAL (Steals not included).  What is PlumDistrict?  Their goal is to “make mom’s day”. Have they had any misses? One or two but they were quick to fix the problem and take steps to ensure the same thing doesn’t happen again. Have I loved them? Yes. I have bought more deals from their site than any other.

Tired of seeing all the chemicals in your kids’ bath products? I know I am. Tell me again why we need Red#40 in bath products? However, as much as I would love to buy organic products, the added expense is just not within my budget.  One of today’s HOT deals is from My True Nature. For $20 you get $40  of kids’ bath products. 50% savings WITHOUT coupons. I’m there!  Best of all, the company was started by “another mom” who wasn’t happy with the products out there. I love supporting “mom companies”.

As usual, remember to read the fine print before you buy and these deals are good until the sale ends OR they sell out of vouchers.
