A neat alternative to meatless Fridays

If you follow meat-less Fridays, or well, meat less all the time, here is a cool alternative.

At The Mushroom Cap, 114 West State Street in Kennett Square, they’ve started offering pom pom mushrooms. They are an exotic. They are very cool to see. I haven’t tried them yet, but I’ve heard that just sauteed in olive oil, garlic and salt & pepper is good. I’m sure you could also do an internet search for recipes too. They are $10 a pound, which sounds high, but it’s really not. A quarter to a third of a pound, or $2-$3 is a perfect amount for a small family dinner, if accompanied with a pasta or something.

And, it’s morel season! This one I’m not as anxious to try. They certainly are not as visually appealing as the pom poms. But foodies love them and can’t wait until they have arrived. Please call 610.444.8484 to make sure that they are in the cooler before you come.

The store also always carries on a daily basis-shiitake, maitake, crimini, all sizes of whites, portabellas and ….I forget what else.

Is buying fresh mushrooms any better or different than grocery store mushrooms? Absolutely! Is fresh corn on the cob bought at the farm better than grocery store corn? Same principle. Many of the mushrooms were picked that morning, doesn’t get any fresher than that.

MMMM…I just love mushrooms. I often make different variations of wild mushroom sauces and use a whole bunch of different wild mushrooms. Thanks for posting.

  2. Portobellos are a good alternative too for meatless Fridays. They have a great meaty taste that goes well on a green salad or with pasta.
