Hockessin Liquors-tasting event

I know I plug Hockessin Liquor quite a bit. It’s the closest wine store to my home (lucky me!), no sales tax, they offer great discounts plus they have 15% off coupons on the back of Acme receipts. 15% off is great–and it’s valid even if you only buy one bottle. There’s, uh, ahem, a much larger and much more publicized store just down in DE a bit further in Pike Creek area, but they make you buy an entire case of the exact same item before they give you a discount. That doesn’t work well for me. Hockessin Liquor is also a family-owned small business and you know my penchant for supporting the little guy. My husband went there on Friday to get some things and a salesperson gave him an invitation and told him “here, give this to your wife.” I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or not, that I’m known at the local wine store.

And although these features have zero appeal to me, my husband likes that they have a great beer selection and you can buy it one bottle at a time if you prefer. That’s good for him because if he reads about a new micro-brew that he wants to try, he can try just one bottle before investing in more. I don’t drink beer, this is why those features of the store don’t appeal to me.

Anyway, the invitation they gave me is for a tasting event on May 21 from 3-6. Checked the calendar and that’s a Saturday. I put in on my calendar and told Dan he’ll have to watch the boys. Since it’s on 41 and just a stone’s throw away, afterwards I’d like to go to Taqueria Moroleon. They were recently favorably reviewed by Craig Laban which is pretty damn cool. You know you’ve hit the big time when you get that kind of review, and here it is, in little ole’ Avondale.

Anyway, back to the wine tasting. I’m assuming anyone can go, but if you get an invitation, you turn that in in order to be eligible for raffles they are doing. So stop in and ask if you can be entered. I love giveaways, especially wine giveaways! Refreshments are being provided by the Back Burner, another local favorite of mine. If you’ve never hosted a holiday gathering or party and served their Better Cheddar, you are missing out. Seriously. It has become a staple at parties I host. It has a very strong flavor though, not sure what I’d pair it with.

Hope to see some of you there!

Another giveaway! 24k Wine Glasses

I was going to wait until we hit 1000 fans on Facebook to do more giveaways, but what the heck? Why not do it now? Especially since this prize goes along nicely with a wedding–a royal one at that.

You all know I love wine deals. So when I saw an opportunity to do a product review & giveaway from the best in the business, Wine Enthusiast, of course I jumped at the chance.

I recently received a few items from them to try & review. One was this foil cutter. My dad sometimes makes fun of me because I don’t know how to use a traditional corkscrew. I have one of the newer lever-style models, and combined with the right foil cutter, it’s just so easy. Why would I want to just scrape at the foil with the end of the corkscrew? He’s very old-school sometimes. Anyway, this foil cutter works very well.

I also got two pairs of these wine glasses. A pair for me and a pair for you! They are called Old World, and are hand-painted with 24k gold! Nope, I’m not kidding. They are appropriate for both red and white wine which makes them perfect for any occasion. I will be toasting the prince & princess tomorrow, as I watch reruns of their wedding (not getting up at 4 am, I’m not that crazy!). I can’t go to London, so sipping wine out of an Old World 24k wine glass will have to do.

Will you join me? All you have to do is leave a comment, and tell me your favorite type of wine. You can be as vague as just saying red or white, or be as specific as a grape variety or brand. This contest ends Sunday night at 8 pm, and random.org will pick a winner. Good Luck!
