10 days left in the month!

You have just 10 days to purchase and pay for any merchandise that is eligible for a tax rebate. The installation does not have to be done by 12/31, and anyway….the rebate doesn’t include paid labor, just materials. It has to be related to home energy savings–HERE is an article that CNBC did a few weeks ago about what is eligible.

I know, I know…it’s the holidays and you’re busy. But it’s good for your wallet and good for the planet!

It’s Super Saturday, meh. Local options instead!

In recent years, retailers have learned that the last Saturday before Christmas (which is today!) often rivals Black Friday weekend in terms of sales figures. So now they’ve given it a name-SuperSaturday. And many big box stores are offering Black Friday type sales and deals, and sales hours too!

If you legitimately have to do some shopping, there are great deals to be had. But if you’re done, then hey, you’re done. Don’t be lured by the hype into spending more money just because something is a great price.

And instead of fighting the crowds at the malls and big box centers, I’d like to offer these local alternatives for last minute gifts:

Avon News in Avondale-has lots of Hallmark items and products for teacher gifts and things. Get your xmas cards here if you ran out and need more, or, if you didn’t do them yet. They also carry Webkinz and Japanese Erasers, two hot kid trends right now that make great stocking stuffers. Oh, and they have Melissa & Doug toys too.

Mushroom Cap in Kennett Square-fanastic selection of local mushroom themed items and food gifts.

Hilltop Crab House-On Rte 41. I saw on their sign yesterday that they have an offer-get a $25 gift card when you buy $100 worth of gcs. I’ve never been there but I’ve heard good things about their all-you-can eat crab feasts.

Peebles-yes, it’s a national chain, but most often much less crowded than the malls. They carry lots of national brands like Clinique, Woolrich, Fisher Price, Osh Kosh, Yankee Candle. And they almost always have coupons available, ask the clerk.

Wine-Wine makes a great gift and the store at the top of the hill on 41, where Toadstool used to be and where Two Fat Guys is, has a great selection.

Equinox-at the Longwood shopping center. Lots of interesting things to be found in this store.

So take your pick–join the hysteria at the malls, get caught in traffic and spend your last weekend before xmas in exasperation…..or support your local merchants, get a nice gift, and still have most of the day to yourself!

Food Prices to Rise

According to this article in the WSJ (I just knew I’d use that free subscription!), General Mills, Kellogg’s and others are announcing that for 2011, their prices will be higher and promos more stingy.

Boo for us. But, as usual, couponers will adapt and we’ll still find ways to get great deals.
