Great dining + Great prices=Restaurant weeks

A trend that is really gaining steam is the concept of Restaurant Weeks. If you don’t know, this is what a Restaurant Week is: In a given geographic area, like a city, a bunch of restaurants band together and pick a week to be the Restaurant Week. Generally they are held during their slower months, which here in the northeast is January-March. They come up with a fixed price for lunches and dinners, and for one week, you get that price. Usually, at least in this area, the price includes three courses–an appetizer, an entree and dessert.

This can be a great way to try new restaurants without investing a ton of money, visit restaurants that would typically be a “special occasion” restaurant to you, and beat the winter blahs. Here are some restaurant weeks planned for this region. Check them out and plan a date night! Click the links for more information and participating restaurants.

Atlantic City: March 4-10, lunches are $15.12, dinners $33.12.

West Chester, PA: not posted. Had one in 2010, but not last year.

Philadelphia: Hosting two weeks! January 22-27 and January 29-February 3. Lunches are $20, dinners $35.

Wilmington, DE: Dates not posted yet, last year is the last week of March and was $15 for lunches, $35 for dinners.

Newark, DE: January 23-29. Meals are in different tiers, ranging from $10-$25. See link for details.

Five Ways to Cool Down Your Home Heating Costs

The average American household spends $1000 each year heating their home. By implementing the suggestions given, you could save 10-25% on your home heating bill.

Here are some of the tips:

1. Reduce thermostat by one degree when you’re home-1-3% savings.

2. Reduce it by 10 degrees while you are sleeping or at work-10-15% savings.

3. Reduce temperature on hot water heater by 20 degrees-6% savings.

4. Put an insulating blanket on hot water heater-4-9% savings.

5. New/proper/adequate home insulation-20% savings

We’ve done all of these things except #3. We had to replace the insulation in our attic, as it was the original (60+ years old) and pretty worthless. My husband did all the removal work himself which was quite laborious, but it saved us $2000. The new insulation cost us about $1500 but it did qualify for the 2010 tax credit. It will take some years for us to recoup that spending, but we had to do it. After one season, we have definitely felt the difference. We are using so much LESS oil and electricity, despite being home more.

Tropicana Rewards~program ending 12/31/11

Can I just say I am soooo glad this is ending?!?! It was a totally sucky rewards program, but we are pretty brand loyal to Tropicana OJ, so I felt obligated to join it. Then, I’d never enter my codes, and I’d feel bad about trashing (recycling, don’t worry) the OJ bottles without getting the codes……..but the prizes totally sucked………and yay! Now it’s ending.

I’m only telling you this so that you can redeem any points you have. If you weren’t a slacker like me and tossed your bottles into the recycling bin without recording the codes. At the very least, please donate your points to the rainforest, which is one of the options.

I saved 550 sq ft of rainforest today. What did *you* do?
