Believe in ZERO Exploited Children~Human Trafficking Awareness Day

What is human trafficking? It’s essentially modern day slavery. Except it’s not the cute kind of slavery portrayed in some movies–you know, a jolly black woman happily cooks a nice southern meal for the family. Slavery isn’t like that. It’s being kidnapped, forced….sometimes parents are either so destitute and have so little value for their small girls that they sell their daughters into slavery. Slavery did not die off with Abraham Lincoln, it’s still alive and well and occurring every day all over the world. Even here, and even with children. The kids are forced into hard labor, prostitution or worse.

Worldwide, 5.5 million children are victims of forced labor and child trafficking. They have been bought and sold, forced into prostitution, or made to work at grueling, dangerous jobs with little or no pay. Their childhoods are being stolen.

Thousands of these children live right here in the United States. UNICEF believes ZERO children should suffer this way. And you can join their efforts. You can watch this PSA and pass it along.

You can also read the UNICEF toolkit on this issue, become more informed and be a better consumer–avoiding products from companies and countries that are very loose on enforcing child trafficking laws. Toolkit_End-Trafficking_Oct_2012

Do what you can to spread awareness and put pressure on politicians, both near and far. We shouldn’t do business with countries that readily do this. All children deserve a childhood.

smart shopping that empowers women~1000 Shillings

Did you get everything you wanted for Christmas? Did you get a top or an outfit that could use an accessory, or do you still have a gift to buy? Then please visit 1000 Shillings.

1000

1000 Shillings is a fair trade company. That means that the artisans or crafters get a fair price for their products, which is not that common in third world countries. What makes 1000 Shillings different (and better!) is that for one, they reinvest in the women and artisans. They also work to connect the shopper with the artisan, so that your purchase has a small town or local feel to it, even if it came from around the world.

And their things are cute too! Take a look.

Do you knit or crochet? Read to help with Hurricane Sandy.

The following is a guest post from my friend Sarah. I am just amazed at what she is doing and how far she is reaching! Go Sarah!

I was born and raised in Staten Island, New York.  Since Hurricane Sandy hit last week I have seen my hometown destroyed via photos on the internet.  I see facebook posts of old friends talking about the destruction, the suffering and the loss.  My heart is in pain from the devastation that Hurricane Sandy left behind.  While I have made my obligatory Red Cross donation, collected donation items  and drove them to the right places I feel like I need to do more.  It’s getting so cold out and people have lost everything.

As the granddaughter, daughter and niece of knitters and crocheters I thought by collecting handmade hats and giving them out directly to in the communities that lost I could bring a little bit of warmth and love from knitters and crocheters.  So I have created Spreading the Warmth: One Hat at a Time.

I decided I could unite some people, maybe gather up 50 or so hats and bring them home to Staten Island.  To the families that have lost EVERYTHING!!!  A friend of a friend from Staten Island made me a flyer that I started sharing it a little on facebook late Monday night and Tuesday Morning.  Tuesday alone I had 671 hits to my blog post about it, about 100 emails and facebook messages and EVERYONE wanted to help.  I mean EVERYONE….From Canada, to Israel, to The Netherlands, Orlando, Wisconsin, Iowa, California, Nevada AND SO MANY more places I can’t list them all.

I’m looking for more!!  Are you a knitter?  Do you Crochet?  Together we can Spread the Warmth, One Hat at a Time…..

You can follow the collect progress and cheer on everyone on Facebook- https://www.facebook.com/FinneganAndTheHughes

Finnegan is our 5 year old Australian Shepherd and really more like a third child than a dog. All of our children love to sleep in our bed!!  I blog over at www.finneganandthehughes.com

couponers and stockpilers~shelters may need supplies!

I got this message from a fellow Philly Social Media Mom:

Burlington County College’s PE Building has been activated as a Red Cross shelter, and there are currently about 150 people living in the gym – about 100 are adults, and the rest, children. They are sleeping on rows of cots and have very little, if anything, with them. Please if anyone has any of the following items to donate you would be AWESOME! Toiletries: such as shampoo, soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes, combs, sanitizing hand wipes, deodorant, lotion, feminine hygiene products, baby diapers (any personal hygiene supplies!)towels, clean clothing for any age group, toys and games for kids, blankets and pillows. We are going to do the best we can to get the kids a Halloween party tonight anyone interested in volunteering, donating candy or costumes- message me!
