I recently filmed a TV segment (It will be on PHL17’s Eye Opener,that’s the link to see it.) about buying generics or store brand items, as compared to name brand items. With everyone trying to save money these days, it’s a popular topic in grocery stores. But before you make that leap…here are some things to ponder.

1. Generics are generally 20-40% or more cheaper than name brand items. However, generic items tend to be on sale or promotion less often than name brands and don’t offer coupons as often. I often find that with Catalina offers, coupons and other promos, I can get name brand items cheaper than most generics. I am willing to take the time to clip coupons and match them to sales, not everyone else is.

2. Personally, I find that when it comes to food, if taste and texture are very imporant, my family prefers the name brands. A couple of years ago, I think my boys were 1 and 3–I served them generic waffles for breakfast and they refused to eat them. They were much too young to have name brand awareness, so clearly they just didn’t like the taste. You have to find the balancing point or sweet spot–the highest quality that your family desires at the lowest price.

3. I buy a lot of generics when it comes to staples-flour, sugar, vinegar, plastic wrap and so on. Even though at times I may be able to find a name brand (with coupons) that is cheaper, I am saving both time and money by buying the generics. I’m not taking the time to clip coupons and match them to sales and deals, and I’m still saving money.

4. Double check how much you are actually saving by buying store brands. In recent years, the price gap between name brands and generics has narrowed. If you are sacrificing flavor or taste, make sure the money savings is worth it.

5. Double check to make sure you’re still getting a great value. If you buy generic laundry detergent or paper towels at half the price, but end up using twice as much to get the job done–you haven’t saved anything.

6. Check with your stores e-savings or other discount programs, because many stores are offering more coupons and discounts on their store brands. For example, the Supervalu chain (Acme, Osco, Albertson’s, etc.) has recently been offering many of their store brands on Saving Star.

For me, I find it’s best to mix it up. Like I said, I’ll buy flour, sugar and generic items like that, but have never been happy with a generic face moisturizer or breakfast cereal. As always, remember that Smart Spending isn’t always about the cheapest item available, it’s about the best value for your dollar!
