Get in the holiday spirit at Sesame Place with ‘A Very Furry Christmas’

The following is a guest post from Laura, who contributes here periodically.

My family and I were thrilled to go back for a second year to Sesame Place’s a Very Furry Christmas. I have two boys ages 4 and 5.  I didn’t tell them where we were going and after falling asleep in the car they both woke up and saw where we were and started squealing!  I could sense the excitement as well and started to feel the magic of Christmas take over.

As a family we have been to Sesame Place over a dozen times.  However, each time we go we have a different experience.  The Very Furry Christmas creates an experience so unique from other times of the year.  I was most impressed with the lights and decorations.  You cannot help but to be awed by the hundreds of Christmas trees that are lit up all over the park.  The entire experience is geared around the Christmas holiday.  There are shows that are holiday-themed, the parade is a special holiday parade and the characters are dressed in their own holiday outfits.  Sesame Place has changed every detail of the park to capture the holiday season, including their food choices.  Vendors were selling hot chocolate and gingerbread cookies.  YUM!  One part of the park even had “snow” falling.  My children could not believe that there was snow at Sesame Place and they were truly convinced that it was “magic.”

They love meeting the characters.

In addition to all of this Holiday excitement, the rides are open as well.  So as a family we also enjoyed my children’s favorite rides.  It is amazing to come back to Sesame Place and as my children mature, their tastes evolve as far as what their favorite rides are.  For the longest time my four year old would enjoy the shows and characters the most.  I was shocked when he told me he wanted to climb the ropes.  This is something that he would have never done before and was terrified to even try. I was so proud of him as I watched him climb up the rope maze without any hesitation.

The shows change with the seasons.

Our fun filled day ended with a trip to Santa’s workshop.  While waiting in a fairly short line, my children’s attention was focused on the elves in Santa’s workshop.  They were given a piece of paper and a crayon to write down or draw what they wanted for Christmas.  Then the big moment came where they could sit on Santa’s lap!

We got a great picture of the boys with Santa with a really cute frame.

Overall I would recommend A Very Furry Christmas for all families  There is so much to do and just being there is a great way for everyone, parents and children, to get into the Holiday Spirit and makes a great family tradition. We have also had season passes in the past, which makes a nice holiday gift. They are on sale now at 25% off.

We were compensated with free admission in exchange for this post. All opinions are our own.

Thrifty Thursday, November 15~vintage Sesame Street books for $0.15 each!

I’m not a big thrift store shopper. Mainly because we don’t really have a thrift store. Wait, scratch that, we do have the new Habitat for Humanity store in Kennett Square. I’m just not in the habit of going there yet. But, I am a big used book sale person and kids consignment person. We have lots of good consignment sales here, every fall and every spring. And the Avon Grove Lions Book Barn is open April to October. The week before Hurricane Sandy, I had the opportunity to visit both and am sharing my finds. This will be a part of a linkup on Fun Finds for Families who will be doing a Thrifty Thursday linkup.

Here are my two finds from those shopping excursions. The first was the half-price day at the Kennett Square Preschool Consignment sale. Saturday is half price day, so I scored all of those items for $0.50 each!

melissa and doug puzzles

I will admit that some of the wooden puzzles did show signs of wear and tear, but at that price, I’ll take them! I mean, those Melissa and Doug puzzles are usually $10 each! And I love the wooden block thing, it’s an old school one with the wooden base, and it still makes the animal sounds.

The next photo is from the last weekend of the Avon Grove Book Barn. For that weekend, they had a deal of $5 a bag and they gave you a plastic shopping bag. I had ours stuffed, really pushed the limit. I even asked the guy–“Can I do this?” because I couldn’t even carry the bag by the handles or the bag would have given out. He winked at me and said “You did good.”

vintage books

When I got home I counted them–34 books for $5, or about $0.15 each! I was really pleased with my assortment. About half of my books are these vintage Sesame Street hardcover books that they don’t print any more. I remember them from being a kid and my kids still love Sesame Street. My 3-year-old grabbed that vintage snowman book and said he wanted it. I grabbed the Ramona books because they are in perfect condition and my boys are just starting to enjoy me reading chapter books to them. Ramona and Beezus brings back such good memories for me! I had them all, wonder where they are now … probably with my Judy Blume collection.

Anyway, I love shopping secondhand not just for the savings, but because it also helps the environment. Subscribe to our site and you’ll be kept informed of all the consignment sales and the Avon Grove Book Barn!

A Very Furry Christmas at Sesame Place~opens November 17

I am so excited! We are going to Sesame Place again this Saturday! I swear, I enjoy it just as much as my boys do. When I originally got the invitation from Sesame Place, I was a bit leery of introducing the whole concept of Christmas, or starting to do actual Christmas stuff the week before Thanksgiving. But, today I had this thought–I love this season so much, I think every year I will start it a week before Thanksgiving, why not? Why do they have to be separate? I’m rambling, but very excited to get our season underway.

To kick off the festivities, the Imagination Movers will be there this weekend!
