Garbage Day tips-protect yourself against ID fraud!

Instead of doing a recycling/repurposing food post for garbage day, thought I’d remind everyone of this safety tip. It’s tax time and everyone is going through their office/desk drawers and digging up all sorts of financial and personal paperwork. If ID thieves do get your information, it can take years to recover, so take all precautions.

Going through your garbage is one way that Identity Thieves get information. Do not put out your garbage the night before garbage day, unless it’s unavoidable. Use a shredder for important papers, or depending on where you live, burn them. Don’t throw away anything unshredded that contains your personal information. I don’t have a shredder (I’m too afraid of the boys getting their fingers in it!) so here is my funny tip–I keep personal papers in a small pile in our office. When I am ready to throw them out, I tear them up into tiny pieces, and I throw them into the diaper pail bag! That way, if an identity thief wants my info, he’s going to have to piece together shredded papers that have been fermenting in the diaper pail.

Make sure that whatever online filing programs you are using are secure, as well as your wireless internet connection.

If you are a military family, particularly if your military person is deployed, take extra precautions. A new trend in ID fraud is to target deployed military personnel, mainly because if you are overseas, you can’t see what is happening and respond in a timely manner. Sad, but true!

Be very careful on the phone and avoid phishers. No company that you do business with should be calling you and asking you for personal information. Ask to call them back.

Make sure you set very strong passwords online. Use lower case, uppercase, capitals and numbers. Always know what your kids are doing online. Keep your kids included in these conversations, as is age appropriate, so that they have the knowledge as they get older.

Pay attention to incoming mail. If your newborn baby is getting credit card offers, you may have a problem. Pay attention to what junk mail is appearing, because it may be triggered by something identity thieves are doing. Call 1-888-5-OPTOUT and opt out of pre-approved credit card offers. That way they won’t show up in your mailbox for someone to steal.

Keep only what is absolutely necessary in your purse or wallet. Consider a safe deposit box or home safe for important documents.

Monitor your credit report. At minimum, you should check it once every 6-12 months.

Tax Time – For Real!

We are such slackers. We had most of our tax stuff ready to go about a month ago but just never got around to finalizing the paperwork to send to our accountant.  Today is THE day. Yet again I wish I was brave enough to do my own taxes but I’m not. Someday when I don’t work “for myself” cleaning houses I will be brave enough. It would be so much cheaper.

So, if you do do your own taxes, make it easy on yourself AND save some money! PLUS, don’t wait until April 16th and deal with the pressure of having to rush.  Use H & R Block’s free online program to file your Federal taxes for FREE. Then decide if you want to file State taxes through them for a small fee (really, it is small compared to a CPA) or paper file the state ones.

Best of all, there is no gimmick. You don’t enter you credit card information until you are satisfied and ready to submit them. I even tried it out to make sure.

Sherwin Williams~25% Coupon~WEEKEND ONLY!

Sherwin Williams is having a sale this weekend BUT you HAVE to have the coupon to get the sale. Here is where I shamelessly  plug  them. I love Sherwin Williams Paint. I really do, and not just because my husband works there. While I think there is no better paint company to work for, their quality really does speak for itself. I know. We have tried different paints to “cheap out” since we rent. They just weren’t worth it. We have even used other companies’ paints that were supposedly “on par” and they weren’t.

So, print out this coupon – 25% OFF PAINTS & STAINS, 15% OFF PAINTING SUPPLIES at Sherwin-Williams. If you happen to go to Newtown Square Sherwin Williams, tell them Heather sent you.  Remember, the sale is THIS WEEKEND ONLY, WITH COUPON.

Salsa or Bruschetta recipe~just a few minor changes!

I make my own salsa. Once you get used to eating it with fresh herbs and tomatoes, you’ll never want to go back to the jarred stuff. Ick. Anyway, had a request for the recipe again, so here it is.In a food processor, I blend these items–and no, I don’t really measure anything. Everything is “to taste.” I don’t care for a lot of salt, but we do like a lot of cilantro and jalapeno. Your taste may vary.Juice of half or a whole limesalt & pepper

one half or one whole jalapeno, de-seeded

garlic (I usually use anywhere from a tsp to a tbsp, from a jar of minced)

cilantro

*You may want to add red onion, hubby doesn’t care for it, so I leave it out or add very little.

Once that is all ground, I add tomatoes. That’s it! Then you process it to be as fine or as chunky as you want it to be. I’m so picky that now, I won’t usually even make it if I can’t find good summer tomatoes. Which basically means we go about half the year not eating salsa or bruschetta. My preference is the Herr’s or Grande chips, just be aware that they are pretty salty, so I adjust my salt as such. I made this for my family when we were out in Arizona, and they really liked it. And, I forgot the garlic. It was very good on a tortilla chip with guacamole.

For bruschetta, you just make a few adjustments. No cilantro, use basil instead. Use lemon instead of lime. Use white onion instead of red, and also add some parmesan, some balsamic vinegar and a few tsps of olive oil. Oh, and skip the jalapeno. Spoon on to toasted bread and you’re done. It’s super yummy spooned on to a good garlic bread.

For the bruschetta, you can also add rosemary, capers, olives or anything other additive that will match. If you find awesome seasonal yellow & heirloom tomatoes, wow! I can make a meal on this.

It’s really very hard to mess this up. I’ve even turned it into gazpacho after botching a batch. Can you use canned tomatoes? I don’t know, I’ve never tried. These are both also great garbage day recipes. I often (don’t tell my hubby!) scrape the bad/soft spots off of produce and make a batch. It’s a great way to throw these things together instead of throwing them out.
