5 things that are annoying me, post election (probably not what you think!)

The election is over. Big day come and gone, and now it’s time for the dust to settle. And like many Americans, I’m reflecting on what has happened the past few months, and finding myself really annoyed. And since I have a blog, when I get annoyed, I feel like ranting sometimes. So in no particular order, here is what is annoying me.

The election process-Ok, really? This is 2012 and we can’t have an election that runs smoothly? Is it reasonable that so many Americans waited in line for long hours to cast their vote? Especially since in some districts, races were very close. American Idol has figured out how to garner millions of votes in a short time frame, we should be able to also. It’s crazy that we don’t have a uniform set of times, procedures, policies and so on. In this day and age, there is no reason an American should have to give up an entire work day to vote for President. Move it to a Saturday, so schools don’t have to close. The entire actual election process in this country is complex, archaic, and disenchanting voters. We should be louder about this.

Election spending-How many times did you hear the phrase “most expensive election in history” regarding either a local or national race? It’s disgusting, when so many people in the USA and around the world are going without. That election funding rule/law needs to be overturned–the one that prohibits unlimited spending by special interest groups. We’ve obviously demonstrated as a people that we can’t handle it responsibly.

Negative ads-I’ve seen so many politicians denounce negative attack ads. And they all still do it.

Pundits-Why can’t they all go out and find a real job? Why do so many people take what they say as gospel and truth? When will they stop yammering on and on?

Gerrymandering-When are some districts/states/locales going to make redistricting a priority? It’s so obvious that so many districts were not drawn in a logical manner, but according to how the votes would go. There’s one rep in this area, and his district “snakes” (that was the media’s word, not mine) across 5 counties. Five. In Pennsylvania–have you seen how big and populated our state is? There is no reason to have that in a rural area, much less suburban Philadelphia.

Career politicians-Back in the “good ole days,” men left their vocation for a year or two or six to serve their country as a politician. Their fathers and brothers held down the business and maintained it while they took this ‘noble cause’ and did their service. Then, when their term was up, they returned home and jumped right back into the business. That doesn’t happen today. And when you are a career politician who doesn’t have a job/vocation to return home to, you do what is best to keep your job. And that’s not necessarily what is best morally or for your constituents. I wish we could change this.

And now that’s 6 things. Ooops, sorry. Told you I felt like ranting. Ok, to balance it out better, here are some things I am happy about today.

I am very happy to see more women winning important positions, including the first Asian-American woman and a woman with significant disabilities. I am happy that more minorities are voting in elections than just a few years ago. I am happy that while our country appears to be divided, that to me, it does feel like we are on the mend–and I am glad that at least Americans are passionate about politics again. We need to get involved, we need to demand more and better from our legislators.

Have a good day, and remember, we’re all in this together.

{Tuesday Task Challenge} Use a timer to keep your home cleaner

timers housekeepingI work from home most of the time. Any Stay-at-home Mom or Work-at-Home mom can tell you–sometimes being in your own home all the time can be distracting. Mind you, I love that I can work from home, but it does require discipline and balance. Some days I get overwhelmed because I have so much work to do, and at the same time, my house is dirty and cluttered and it’s distracting. But the fact is, I could clean all day, every day and still never be caught up. When I have work to get done, I can’t be distracted by household chores–I have to learn how to make those things wait, no different than if I was working outside of my home and wouldn’t be able to get to it. But for those of you that work at home, you know how it goes–Oh let me get a glass of iced tea and while I’m here I’ll just empty the dishwasher, and then oh, why not, wipe down the counters and oh my look at those fingerprints on the fridge and is it just me or is my stove filthy? And then I’ve wasted 30 minutes of my time and I have work deadlines to meet.

Several years ago, I got this tip from a parenting board that I used to participate on. Sometimes I do this practice quite diligently, and then there are months that go by and I forget about it and have to get back into it. But it’s so simple-

Use a timer.

Yeah, that’s it.

I just set a timer, anywhere from 15-90 minutes. And once it’s set, all I do is clean and tidy up for that time. No TV, no phone, no Facebook. Just cleaning and tidying. I have a small house, but I’m always surprised at how much I can do in 20 minutes, when that’s all I’m doing and don’t let anything distract me. Today in 20 minutes I got the kitchen and living room and boys’ room tidied, and the entire house vacuumed. Once I’ve done that, for my 15 minutes or even an hour, I feel like I can work without being distracted, or if we want to do something fun, I can do so guilt-free.  My 3-year-old actually thinks it’s a lot of fun, and he likes to see how many toys he can pick up before the buzzer goes off.

When I do this regularly, almost daily, my house is so much cleaner overall. It’s a great way to keep family members engaged in the process and help, especially if they know it will only be 15 minutes or so.

Try it, it works!

Re-Purposing Food: 2 Meals into 3

Last week with Hurricane Sandy quickly approaching, I decided I would bake and cook in preparation. If for some reason we lost power I wanted food in the house. Obviously I couldn’t make anything that would have to be heated up so I made some pasta to toss with cheese, pepperoni, and balsamic dressing. I also pre-cooked brown rice. At the worst we could have a cold rice salad, tossed with fresh vegetables. We didn’t have a power outage. That is so okay with me. It just means my prep has made my week so much easier.

Over the weekend I had made Broccoli Smoked Cheddar Soup. Use your favorite recipe. There is nothing so special about my recipe or lack there of that will make this not work for you.  Monday we decided to make a hot lunch in case we lost power that afternoon. We baked chicken breast, used some of the pre-cooked rice, and smothered it in mushroom soup. There you have it, two meals.

Last night was a “ugh, what am I making for dinner? I don’t want to cook” kind of night. I went to the fridge to see what was there.

1 chicken breast with approximately 1/2 cup mushroom soup

4-5 cups rice

2 (ish) cups broccoli soup

Mixed them together and heated them through in a 375 degree oven.

chicken and rice

My leftovers are gone but instead of having to make 3 meals from scratch I was able to utilize leftovers to make a stressful day end a bit easier.  This 3 day combo is DEFINITELY going on my meal plan and I am off to see what other meals I can do this with.  This way I can Make meals Monday and Tuesday and have an easy “throw together” on Wednesdays when I work outside the home.

What leftovers would you combine to create a new dish? Feel free to share.
