I went to Giant this morning to use up the last of my $5 catalinas. In the lobby, they had a shelving unit holding the weekly sales flyers/ads as usual. But what was different this time is that it was actually stocked with dollar doublers! Usually the only way to get those is in the mail. I always assumed it was a sort of quantity control thing-that they didn’t want you picking them up at the store and using more than four. But if you need/want more, that’s where I found them.
Back to Basics Series: What do I do when a deal doesn’t work as planned?

How many times have you said this at the registers?
I screwed up a deal yesterday. I hate when I do that! I was at CVS and wanted the Neutrogena sunscreen deal. Found two that I wanted, shelf tags made no mention of an Extra Bucks deal, but I grabbed them anyway. Then, on my way to the registers, I passed a display of Revlon nail polish. I liked the colors, checked my coupon binder, I had three Revlon nail coupons. Grabbed three nailpolishes, as I remembered this deal being Limit 5 or 6, and headed to registers. (Has anyone figured out yet where I screwed up?)
My plan was to pay for the nail polish with the extra bucks that I had, plus Revlon coupons. I would then be getting $12 back and I would use that + Neutrogena coupons to pay for Neutrogena. First transaction went very smoothly, I paid $0.46 oop and the cashier complimented me on my bargaining prowess. Feeling very smug, I handed her one of my business/blog cards. By this time, it was obvious that I wasn’t getting any Extra Bucks from the nail polish. I hesitated, then paid about $15 for the Neutrogena and got $10 back. Ouch! I can’t remember the last time I paid $15 oop for anything at CVS.
What did I do wrong? The nail polish deal starts TODAY and I was in there yesterday. In my head, I remembered reading and typing about the nail polish, just didn’t remember the dates. So what am I going to do? I came home and tossed the three nail polishes in the drawer with the other 25 free nail polishes I have, and call it a day. I thought about returning them, then just decided against it. Win some, lose some–in the past five years I’ve done very well at CVS, so I’m just going to eat this loss.
There are a zillion reasons why a deal won’t work as planned. First, let me preface this by saying, I am not one of the couponers that does “scenarios.” I don’t plan out my transactions, carefully writing down exactly what I’m buying, exactly what coupons I’m using, calculating tax…..oiy vey. The main reason I don’t do that, is that you need to be able to think on your feet. Especially since there is a very good chance that the stores won’t have the items you planned on buying.
A few deals coming up at Acme (one starts today!)
Last week, when I posted about deals at Giant, I mentioned the Banana Boat sunscreen deal. The whole list of participating items is in that post. Apparently that is a national catalina offer, and is expected to start at Acme next week. Watch your ad for details. If you have a Giant, I still would recommend that you do it there if you can. Mainly because many of us have $5 catalinas to burn there, and they have dollar doublers this week and most of the corresponding coupons are $1 in value and therefore will not double at Acme. But, if you don’t have a Giant, you may want to check this deal out when it does come to Acme.
Also, I got a “warning catalina” for a P&G deal coming up. It’s a $5/$20 offer.
Acme (Supervalu) this week, May 22; a few freebies
Acme is having another dud of a week, though there are a few freebies to be had. Make sure you check your Avenu & printables before you go.
On the back page of ad, there’s another $5 instant savings deal. The Juicy Juice is an ok price and there are printables to go with it. And when I signed up for the Woman’s Freebies last week, I got a $1 off 1 for Nestle Drumsticks sent to my email. Those are a part of the instant savings deal.
If you got the $0.50/1 Lawry’s coupons from 5/15 inserts, they will double to make it free. And from that same insert, grab the $1 Ronzoni Garden Delight coupon and get some free pasta.
Go like Better Oats on Facebook, print your coupons and get a few free oatmeals, since that is also $1 this week. Best Life Buttery Spread is a buck, so free with coupon. And double check the Oscar Mayer section. I saw many items marked at $1 and I know there were $1 coupons last week. I gave mine away, so I’m not sure exactly of the wording, but could be a match.
