2-week check in on the savings pledge

Today marks the second full week of the Savings Pledge. How are you doing? If you haven’t joined yet, either click the button on this blog page, or there is a tab on my Facebook page.

I personally feel like I’ve bombed the past two weeks, after looking at my banking transactions. Yeah, I scored lots of very cheap and free stuff at CVS, Acme, whatever. I stayed away from restaurants and take-out, that was good.

What did me in was little trips to the grocery store. The “Oh, we really could use some fruit and some spinach” trips that suddenly turn into a $40-$60 trip. After realizing that, and my post yesterday about an envelope system, that’s what I’m going to try. I’m even going to leave my check card at home.  I think I’ll see significant savings in just a couple of weeks doing this.

Other things I’m doing, some I’ve mentioned before:

Only running washer on cold water, short cycle, line drying everything but towels.

Setting dishwasher to do short cycle, and I’m pre-programming it to run after 10 pm–I read somewhere after 10 pm, your electric rates are lower.

A/C-only using it when it is super-duper hot, like last week, and keeping it at 78-80.

Concentrating on combining errands and shopping trips to save gas.

Any special outings such as restaurants or recreation–Must be free, or we have a season pass (Sesame Place) or use a Groupon or something. No out of pocket money spent on that until all those other options are exhausted.

Also this week, I’m going to focus on ideas on how to bring more money in to our household. Stay tuned!

Diaper prices this week-7/25

I’ve gotten away from this weekly feature, highlighting the different diaper prices. But, I have a friend, who is pregnant, just found out she’s having a boy (yay!) and today she told me she wants to start her diaper stockpile. So I promised her I would try to stay on top of doing this each week.

I’m often asked what I think is a good price for diapers or wipes. Get out your phones at the stores and figure out what you’re paying, per diaper or wipe. This is what I tend to go by:

Diapers: Anything below $0.15 per diaper is my stockpile price. How many I would get would depend on how low it actually is. At $0.12-$0.15 per diaper, yeah, I’d get several. Below $0.10–I’d go nuts, lol. At $0.15-$0.20, I’d get a few if I needed them. Anything over that, only if I absolutely need them.

Wipes: 1 penny per wipe and under, stock up! $0.02 per wipe, yeah, I’d get them but not go crazy. $0.03 per wipe, only if I need them. Think about your average tub of wipes that holds approximately 70 wipes–the average asking retail price, no discounts, is over $3. That’s over $0.03 per wipe!

Now, on to some deals this week.

Walgreens-the infant care booklet and the monthly booklet both have coupons for Huggies wipes. Mfr coupon for $0.50 last week, makes them $0.99 per tub, or about $0.015 per wipe.

Yesterday’s inserts had a $2 Walgreens Huggies diaper coupon, that can be stacked with a mfr Huggies coupon, and it’s good through September. Hang on to it, if Coupons.com runs another $2 or $3 Huggies printable……could be some great deals.

Huggies are on sale for 8.99 a jumbo pack at Walgreens, so even if you have the $2 coupon plus the $1.50 mfr coupons, not a bad deal, but I wouldn’t go crazy.

Superfresh-no diapers or wipes deals listed, assume full price. They are advertising the 216 ct wipes, Huggies for $5.99. That’s $0.028 per wipe–almost 3 cents. It adds up! This is one of the reasons you have to closely evaluate what you’re paying at warehouse clubs. Big packages doesn’t always mean lower prices.

Acme-Running the $5 catalina deal, but the $5 catalina is ONLY good for Pampers products, not on just anything. Still if you have Pampers coupons plus catalinas to burn from all their other offers recently, not bad.

CVS-store brand diapers are $6.99 a pack, or about $0.27 per diaper. Huggies & Pampers are $8.99. Unless you get some rockin’ coupons to go with these prices, or have Extra Care Bucks to burn, I wouldn’t do it. On the back page, there is an offer on the boxed ones. Without any coupons, that deal comes to about $0.20 per diaper, with coupons-$0.17-$0.19 per diaper. Worth considering if you need them.

Rite Aid has Luvs for $16.99 with $2 back in UPs rewards.

Target has the big boxes for $30, then a $10 gc when you buy two big boxes. So, about $60, minus any coupons, then get a $10 gc. Do the math first, maybe it’s a good deal.

Babies R Us has the ugly denim ones on sale for $5 a pack. Not bad per diaper, again, do the math as these packs have fewer diapers in them than regular packs.

Current/future catalina offers, 7/25

If you have stores that do Catalinas, there are a lot of upcoming offers. Pay close attention to the list, there’s Pampers, Viva and a few good other ones.

Remember, if it says “in future savings” that means that you’ll be getting that amount back when making the specified purchase. If it says “when you buy” that means it should be a printable coupon. Make sure you register for the site, and at least give your correct zip code, if you don’t care to give away your personal information to marketers. It will tell you which stores close to you are participating in the catalina offers.

The Dole offer might be a double-dip opportunity, plus I saw printable links on Hotcouponworld. Check my earlier Acme post, near the end. I just C&P the Dole part this morning.

When my ads come on Wednesday, I’ll see if there are any matchup opportunities for Playtex, Pampers, Viva and Degree. They look like they could be good!

LOTS of catalina offers coming up at Acme, July 22-28

I’m quite surprised that there aren’t more Box Tops deals. Maybe the week after next, but they told us at Box Tops Univ that the big back-to-school kickoff is July 26. Anyway, here are the deals, I added some matchups but ran out of steam. I’ll add more tomorrow and repost. Thanks to my friend HM for helping with the typing. You know it’s a big catalina week if it takes assistance.
