Giant converting 16 Genuardi’s stores to Giants~including Kennett Square?

I posted this topic yesterday on the Facebook page, but not everyone sees that. So thought I’d start it here.

I really miss the old school Genuardi’s, I really do. Genuardi’s ROCKED before they sold out to Safeway. It’s been one giant (no pun intended) crap-fest since then. They just can’t get it together. A few years ago, they closed some underperforming stores and just this week announced that they are selling more to Giant.

Giant Food Stores to buy 16 Philadelphia-area Genuardi’s markets-that’s the headline from Philly.com.

And the list, directly from the article:

Since the Kennett Square store is slated to become a Giant………it begs the question………what about the New Garden (Giant) store? I can’t imagine that they’d close it, since they just remodeled it. Yet I can’t imagine that there is a big enough customer base to support two locations so close together. And then again, ever since Acme closed the store there in New Garden, that whole area has just been circling the drain. There were rumors at one point that Safeway was pursuing the old Acme location. And of course, whenever a grocery store closes or opens in this area….the names Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s pop up. That Whole Foods opened in the Glen Mills Genuardi’s location…..only helps to fuel those rumors. And unless I am positively losing my mind (which is possible) I am certain that within the past year or two, I read in the Kennett Paper that both Walmart and Superfresh in Kennett applied for zoning stuff related to expanding and remodeling to sell groceries. Let’s face it, ever since Genuardi’s sold out to Safeway, that store has not been what it once was.

My ideas: Turn the old stores into a Bounce U or Boomers type attraction.  Or karate or gymnastics or indoor rock climbing or dance. Something for families and recreation, we need it down here!

New Box Tops for Education program + bonus catalina offer!

Yay yay yay! New year, new program for Box Tops for Education.  I used to always post about the Growing Local Learning programs, and couldn’t figure out why other shoppers could do these offers. It wasn’t until I went to Box Tops University that I learned (duh!) that GLL is only for the Supervalu chain of stores (Acme, Osco, etc.). They said they were going to partner with other chains too, it was in the works.

Well, a new program has been announced………..and the chain is…………..are you ready………….the Safeway chain! The Safeway family of stores includes Vons, Dominick’s, Tom Thumb, Randalls, Pavilions, Genuardi’s, Carss and Safeway. This means that the special deals that we have all been doing at Supervalu stores–some of you will now have access to similar offers.

What does this mean for you, if you are a Safeway store shopper? A few things. First, if you haven’t already, you really need to go to the main Box Tops website and register.  Find your school, I believe they are listed by county, it’s been a while since I did ours. If you haven’t enrolled already, your school will get $0.50 when you do. Then, invite grandparents and others that don’t have kids–because you’ll get $0.50 for each of those too.

Next, just like we have Growing Local Learning for Acme and those stores, the Safeway stores will now have 2ways2earn. So you’ll want to register at both of those sites, or whichever ones are applicable to where you shop. Register your shopping card and you’ll get extra coupons added to your card, email notifications of sales and new eBoxTops every month.

And to kick off this program, right now there is a bonus $2 in Box Tops offer at these stores. Just purchase *5* participating items–see your store’s ad for details on participating products and dates. But 5 is a great deal–for us at Acme, it’s almost always 10 items! Don’t forget your printables before you go.

Here are some of the items usually included:

$1.00 off Totino’s Pizza Stuffers
GET COUPON
$0.40 off 2 Pillsbury Sweet Rolls
GET COUPON
$0.80 off 4 Hamburger, Tuna or Chicken Helper
GET COUPON
$0.50 off Cereal Treat Bars

$0.75 off Yoplait Kid Zone yogurt

As always, don’t forget to use my Box Tops for Education Resource page for all the latest information and printables.

Diapers & Wipes~ price round up for week of December 10

Coupons:

Huggies, 11/20 inserts

Pampers, 11/27 inserts

Pricing guidelines (my opinion): Don’t pay more than $0.02 per wipe or $0.20 per diaper unless you’re out. Aim for $0.01 per wipe or less and under $0.15 per diaper–give or take, depending on size of diaper. Larger sizes cost more.

Acme, Dec 9-15:

In-ad store coupon for $2 off a Big Pack of Huggies, Pullups or Goodnites. Combine with mfr coupon.

Amazon, prices change all the time:

This is my pick for the week from Amazon. Always choose Subscribe & Save to get more $ off, just remember to cancel (after they ship) if you don’t want a subscription. Luvs are still the best buy–hovering around $0.17-$0.18 per diaper, shipped, and that’s even for bigger sizes like 4 & 5.

CVS, Dec 11-17:

Pampers jumbo packs are $9.49 with $1 back in Extra Care Bucks.

Genuardi’s (check your Safeway company chain), Dec 11-15:

In-ad store coupon for $2 off a giant pack of Huggies or Pampers, combine with mfr coupons.

Giant, Dec 11-17:

Buy 1 Pampers Giant pack (84-156 ct) and get a free wipes (60-72 ct). I know you can use a diapers coupon, I don’t remember if Giant will let you use a coupon on your free wipes. I’d try it.

Superfresh, Dec 9-15:

Huggies big packs are $19.99.

Target, Dec 11-17:

Nothing in my ad.

Walgreens, Dec 11-17:

W brand wipes, bogo at $2.49. Huggies tubs of wipes 2 for $5.
Huggies Jumbo packs are $11.99 each or two for $19, with $4 back in Register Rewards when you buy two.
