Acme & Superfresh-new ads start today

I’ve only had a few moments to look at the new ads that start today. The Acme ad didn’t have anything spectacular in it, and Superfresh had another 8-10 catalina deals in it again. I never made it there last week, will probably go tomorrow since it’s Staples Teacher Day and they’re right next to each other. But as always, remember it usually works off of shelf prices, not sale prices.

Does spending less money always make more sense?

I’m not sure–let me explain.

We got a postcard from our borough explaining that some sewer work was to be done and that if, during the next 8-12 weeks, our water should appear brown or cloudy, just let it run till it’s clear.

Uh, no thanks. And yes, we do drink our tap water–you don’t think I’d pay for bottled water, do you?

So off to Lowe’s I went. I had a few Lowe’s coupons from recent inserts, many of them for water filters. I look around and decide that I’ll get the $7 Brita filter and I have a $2 coupon. Good deal, right? I then decide that while I’m there, I might as well pick up a replacement cartridge for it.  They were $7.85.

Now look at this–I can purchase the filter with the pitcher for $5, because of course I have multiple coupons. Or I can get just the replacement cartridge for $7.85. Granted, that then leaves me with an entire extra pitcher and lid I don’t really need and it seems wasteful to throw it out. Even without the coupon it’s still cheaper to get the pitcher and cartridge instead of just a cartridge.

I got two pitchers. Not just because it was a better deal but because filtering water in a Brita pitcher is painfully slow. So it will be nice to have two to work with since we drink lots of water. But that pricing just makes NO sense at all.

Same at Giant. The jelly deal–Smucker’s grape jelly for $1.50. Buy two-$3. But…..buy 5 and they’ll give you an additional $5 off. So five jars would actually cost you $2.50. Buying five jars of jelly will cost you $0.50 less than buying two jars. Who thinks of these promos?

Just remember–difference between great price and great deal. Make sure you’re getting a great deal.

Odds & Ends for this week

Sorry I haven’t been posting much. I’m enjoying these last few weeks of summer with my boys and in all honesty, a bit fried on deals lately. Plus there’s not really any “must do” deals that I see.

CVS, Walgreen’s, Kmart, Walmart, Target–lukewarm about all the stuff I read online about these stores. CVS has a Crest freebie if you have Extra Bucks to roll and have the $1 Crest coupon. Personally more and more I’m finding rolling ECBs to be  a hassle and would much rather just take that $1 coupon to Acme/Jewel/Osco and get the $1 Crest with it. If you feel like poking around Kmart, Walmart or Target, I like to take my coupon binder with me sometimes and see what freebie/cheapie matchups I can do. Can usually at least find free razors and other little things.

Acme-once I took a second glance at the Acme/GM/BTFE deal, I did clip some coupons and go do it. Very cheap or free stuff if you use the GM coupons from last week’s paper. You have to buy 10 items though. But both Progresso Soup and the Nature Valley Granola Bars will spit out On Your Next Order catalinas if you buy 4 of them. I’m also the new BTFE coordinator for  my son’s school, so it was nice to get some of those.

Superfresh-haven’t made it to SF this week and not sure I will, though I’d like to. I want to get the Oxi Clean detergent, Danimal and do the Kellogg’s moneymaker. But their shopping carts are so old & rickety, you can’t take 2 kiddos.

Giant-I had a very nice run at Giant today. And with the promise of pizza for lunch if they were good, the boys cooperated. I really wanted to do the free Jif/Smuckers, but it’s only the grape that is included. Of course that’s the only flavor we don’t like. But if you use it, it is the bigger jar in the deal. The Kennett store had the 5 packs of mac & cheese with the FREE Capri Sun attached to it, so I grabbed a few of those plus the 0.99 Capri Sun deal. The Hungry Jack is free if you have the $1/2 coupons, made the syrup very cheap. All in all I got 4 Capri Suns, 3 5-packs of mac & cheese, 6 HJ mix, 4 HJ syrups. All of that for…..free! Used my $10 Kellogg’s catalina plus the balance on one of the Kellogg’s Visa Gift Cards I got in the mail.

In case you didn’t get enough Kellogg’s……..

Two more Kellogg’s deals I saw this week, and there were coupons in yesterday’s paper. Kmart is doing the $10 catalina when you buy 10 items and they do take mfr coupons. The $10 catalina is also still running at Superfresh. If you have enough coupons, the Superfresh deal can be a big moneymaker. Log in your Superfresh card so that you get the $1.25 off of three boxes. Then, add that to whatever Kellogg’s paper coupons you have. It’s on sale for $2 a box. Me? I’m staying away, we have waaaayyyy too much already.
