Building a stockpile

I’ve debated about whether or not to actually publish this post and I will probably pull it down in a few days. I’m not entirely comfortable having it up. But…so often lately I’ve heard “it’s just not worth it” in regards to couponing. So naysayers………this is for you.

Let me preface these photos with building a stockpile takes time. It took me several months to get this to where it is, but now maintaining it is pretty easy. Hotcouponworld has great information on getting started.

First, you have to have access to multiple coupons (preferably free, I would never pay for coupons). Then you just start with one item. If there’s a deal on cereal that we like, I max out on it. I have stockpile prices in my head when I shop.
For instance, $0.50 or less per box, I max out on it, buy as many boxes as I have coupons for or have storage space for.
$0.75-$1.00, I get a few if we need it and it’s a brand we like.
Any more than $1 per box, I only purchase if we absolutely need it, and only buy enough for a week or two and wait for another deal.
I have prices like that in my head for just about every commodity. It is fun and frustrating at the same time. I had dozens of boxes of Green Giant frozen veggies, because they were only $0.25 a box. Now I’m down to about 6 boxes and have not found a deal on them in almost a year. They’re our favorite brand, and I just can’t bring myself to pay $2 a box because *I know* that I can get them for a quarter. So you sort of get spoiled.

But once I’ve maxed out on a good deal, I have time to sit around & wait for another good deal on that commodity.

After that, you just stockpile items as they become available to you, and other items, only buy what you need to get by for a week or two and wait for a deal. It takes time and it takes patience. But once you have a stockpile you can start living off of, that is when you really start to see savings in your grocery bill. At this point, the only thing we really ever pay for full price is produce, milk, eggs, lunch meat, seafood. Pretty much every other item is stockpiled in our house.

Bottom of my pantry. Pepsi products were $1 per 12 pack. Oil was about $0.85 (just got that last week). Tin of EVOO was $10. Everything else-V8, granola bars, Pam, Cheerios, pedialyte, juice….all free.

Our pantry is about 3 feet deep. It used to be a coat closet, but when we remodeled we changed the floor plan a bit, and since this particular closet was right next to the kitchen, we made it into a storage pantry. Plus, my kitchen cabinets are usually busting at the seams, I needed the space!
Let’s see, looking at that assortment of stuff….Ragu was all free, so was the mustard, tuna, pasta. Tea was $0.20 a box, tea mix was free. Barbecue sauces and marinades were all free.

Bottom of linen closet. Bin on left-full of razors and blades. Middle bin-full of batteries. Bin on right-full of toothbrushes. Bag-full of razors. Yep, all free.

My laundry detergent collection. Yep, all free. Gain was $1 or $2 a box. Bounce was $0.50–just got that yesterday.

Side view of basement stockpile. Blue bin is dog food. Yeah, we pay for that, haven’t figured out how to get it for free yet. Though I do use coupons and do rebates. Everything else pictured was free or close to it. Mac & cheese was $0.08 a box I think. Capri Suns were about the same, $0.08 a box.

Storage units in basement. Front view of previous picture. Looking at that assortment of stuff, I know I paid $0.14 for the tubs of wipes, about $2-3 for the Bounty (all total, not each), $3 per can of formula, and I can honestly say the rest of it was free. All coupons and rewards program stuff.

Another storage shelf in basement. All of that stuff on there–didn’t pay for any of it. Seriously. Not pictured: you can’t see inside my white chest freezer that’s right there, but it’s packed, all with free or almost free stuff. All was purchased with coupons and rewards earned at stores.

This is my size 3 stash for Brian. Not pictured: all the size 6s I have stashed for Kevin, and all the 4s for Brian. I haven’t paid for diapers in 2 years, and have never paid for any diapers for Brian. That’s my goal–to not pay for his, ever
!

Lots not pictured, I mean, I don’t want you all to think I’m nuts. But it’s probably too late for that anyway. Our bathroom vanities have tons of stuff in them, so does baby changing table, kitchen cabinets, refrigerator & freezer.

potential strike at Acme

It appears that within the next week or two, Acme workers will go on strike. I’m on the fence about how I feel about crossing picket lines. Overall I’m not a huge fan of labor unions anyway, but I don’t want my usual cashiers to see me and give me even more hassle over coupons.

And, I talked to one of the employees and he said it probably will affect the warehouse. Hence the store will be probably be poorly stocked anyway.

I’ve been finding decent deals at Superfresh lately, so I’ll keep my eye on them. And I guess I’ll go to Giant if I have to. That new store in Jennersville is much too big. And they only double one coupon which is annoying.

Lots of OYNO deals coming next week

My ads came early (yay!) so here’s what I see at first glance:

Giant and Superfresh both doing OYNO deals. Giant’s is Unilever stuff (Ragu, Lipton, Skippy) and Superfresh’s is General Mills. I’m not doing any of those but just putting it out there for you non-Acme shoppers. There are always GM and Unilever coupons out there for you to match up. Superfresh starts Friday, Giant Sunday.

Pepsi/Gatorade: Both CVS and Wags are doing a deal. Spend $20, get $10 back in either ECBs or RRs. The Walgreen’s deal has better prices on the Gatorade, CVS has better prices on the Pepsi. I’m still going to CVS for Gatorade as I have a ton of ECBs to burn and at Wags I’d have to spend actual money. Doritos is also owned by Pepsi and included in both deals. Unless you happen to come across a tearpad at a store, coupons for these items are usually hard to find. Starts Sunday.

Makeup at CVS: Cover Girl and Maybelline both have decent ECB deals that should be almost break even/free deals if you have coupons. I never get Cover Girl coupons in my inserts, but some people do. Some Maybelline is also bogo and CVS usually lets you use 2 coupons on a bogo deal. And don’t forget to see what is on clearance and match it up with your coupons for great deals.

CVS also has a 24 hour allergy relief free after ECB. Roll those bucks if you need to.

Clairol Natural Instincts is $3.99 after ECBs and I think there are $2 coupons out for this. This is the kind I use and I haven’t seen it for much cheaper than this.

Walgreen’s also has a Spend 20, get 10 deal on dayquil, nyquil, vicks. Coupons coming out this weekend. Not free, but cheap if you need it. Ricola cough drops are $1.29 and I have $1 coupons for this–they look like insert coupons. Also running a Unilever deal on the Unilever HBA items-Dove, Caress, Sunsilk. Starts Sunday.

Other items I’ll be looking at at Acme when I do my weekly trip, ad starts on Friday:
Chicken breasts for $1 per lb.
The baby deal I mentioned in a previous blog post.
The Ragu & Skippy bogo deals on back page of ad. There MUST be Unilever coupons coming out this Sunday, with practically every store doing a Unilever deal. So if you don’t currently have any and can wait to grocery shop, I would. Remember Acme will take 2 coupons on a bogo, and double them too, and the Skippy and the Ragu are bogo.
Acme also running a $5/20 General Mills deal. I do not need anything, except maybe Bisquick and Progresso soups. Might be interesting if shelf prices work.
Fresh Express bagged salads are bogo but I think those mfr coupons expired.
Arnold bread on sale for 1.99 and there are $0.55 coupons out. $0.80 is cheap bread and they don’t put any HFCS in theirs, which I like.

I’ll hit Acme for my weekly trip and CVS for the Gatorade, browse the makeup, but that’s about it.

Slow week coming up

On Wednesdays I get my weekly ads in the mailbox for the following week. Overall looks like a slow week, but I like slow weeks once in a while, to take a break.

The Giant ad is a bust, imo, not going there.

Walgreen’s–don’t see anything that warrants a special trip. Celestial Seasonings tea is free with recent mfr coupon and wags coupon. But for some reason I only have one mfr coupon and I went thru all my inserts. Schick Quattro razors are also a good deal if you have any bogo coupons left and combine it with monthly booklet coupon. But I’m not making a special trip for razors.

Kmart–I need a break. I did two trips this weeks. Yesterday I got about $50 worth of stuff for $7 so I was pleased. More of the same-Vaseline intensive care lotion, dove hair care, Glade, some candy for Friday (on sale 3 for $5, use the $1 off 3 coupon to make them 3 for $3), had a Capri Sun catalina from Acme for $1 so my capri sun was $0.50.

CVS–The November monthly deals start and there is a Pampers deal. I’d like to get some Pampers but not sure I have enough ECBs. Have to work on this one. Other than the Pampers, nothing warrants a special trip, imo.

Acme-check out the back page of the ad. There’s a combination deal of General Mills products and Unilever–spend $30 get $15 back. This deal I’ll probably do as part of my weekly shopping trip. There are dozens of items included, and I figure that I can spend $30, then with coupons get my total down to about $17 or $18, and get $15 back. I’m pretty sure there are coupons out there for just about every item listed, so compare your coupons against the list. I’m hoping that this catalina will roll, so I’ll do a transaction, then use my $15 cat to turn around and do it again and hopefully get another one. Don’t forget to go to eatbetteramerica and get any GM printables you may need.
