~Giveaway Time!~Fleece poncho~a must-see item!~

Ok, it was almost 90 degrees here today, and quite humid, so it seems almost silly to be talking about a fleece poncho. But, by the time the contest is over and the winner receives their poncho, chilly late-August nights will be here, along with some breezy beach evenings and so on. So it’s time!

I fell in love with these ponchos when I first saw them at The Growing Tree in Kennett Square. Right now, that is the only place besides online, that you can purchase them. Well, local fairs & festivals too. I bought my niece the so-very-cute brown, pink and white combination with a mushroom embroidered on the front. Unfortunately my diva niece won’t pose for a photo so that my sister in law can send it to me. Trust me, it is very cute and she gets asked about it all the time.

These are great for so many occasions, like:

–In the car, you can slip them on over top of the carseat straps and such, so you don’t have to buckle in all the bulk of a winter coat.

–In-between weather, the “do I or don’t I need to wear a jacket?” type of weather.

–Breezy nights on the boardwalk, or camping or other summer activities where it may get chilly at night.

special needs kids! Parents, you really need to look at this! With these ponchos, you’re not dealing with the fuss of sleeves and buttons and zippers, in addition to worrying about feeding tubes, 02 tubes, wheelchair apparatus and other inconveniences. And if you have a fussy kid who resists getting in/out of things, this is just a quick slip over the head and done!

Here are some great photos of what Precious Ponchos has to offer. And we’re giving one away!

Perfect for windy beach days!

Camo and other very-boy boy prints.

Local winner will also receive $5 paypal to put towards admission tickets ($2 each) towards the Mushroom Festival.
If you do not live local, of course, we will ship it to you.
These are just so cute and great quality. My pictures don’t do them justice. If you do visit the Mushroom Festival, Precious Ponchos will be there. Mention Smart Spending Spot and get $3 off a poncho.

FHA reverse mortgages

I recently came across some articles about FHA reverse mortgages. If you are age 62 or older and own your home, you may want to look into this. That site gave a lot of good information to think about, including a pros & cons list, a mortgage calculator plus some recent articles on the topic from the Wall Street Journal.

Here are some of the basics that you need to know about an FHA reverse mortgage:

A reverse mortgage allows you to access a portion of the equity in your home to obtain tax-free cash without having to make monthly loan payments.

To be eligible for a Reverse Mortgage loan, some key requirements are:

  • Be at least 62 years of age or older
  • Live in your home as your primary residence and have sufficient equity in it
  • Be able to pay any existing mortgages through the Reverse Mortgage
  • Live in a single family home, two to four-unit owner-occupied home, townhouse, approved condominium unit, or certain manufactured homes

You must also meet the following conditions:

  • Attend a HUD-approved counseling session
  • Continue to pay property taxes and homeowners insurance

If you meet all of those requirements, then definitely check out those links and see if this is something for you.

Got my Birthday Pak!

A few months ago, I posted about an offer called Birthday Pak. I had actually signed up for it at the time, but when I did, I was told that this offer was not available for my zip code. I guess they’ve expanded, because mine came in the mail while I was away. It contains eight gift cards, with a minimum value of $20 each. Four of them have minimum purchase requirements. Here is what I got:

Mendenhall Inn-$20 off $50

Joseph Anthony Spa-$25 (going to make a massage appt today!)

Brandywine Prime-$20 (half price burgers & wine, here I come)

Del Haven Jewelers-$100 off $500

Harvest-$20, I’ve heard decent things about this, but have never tried it.

Apricot Lane boutique-$20 off $80

Fit for Life-$50

Concordville Inn-$20

I’m sure that I will end up using some of them, so I think it’s a decent offer and only took a few minutes to sign up.

Book Swap

A few weeks ago, I posted about Thred Up, which essentially is a consignment store, but by mail. They have added some new features to the offer and it looks pretty cool. We have so many duplicate books, I may have to try this.

ThredUP, where moms swap kids clothes, toys and now BOOKS online, just launched a Summer Book Swap!

Send a box of your used books to another mom who wants them (before June 14) and get a $5 swap credit! Credit can be used towards thousands of boxes full of pre-loved clothes, toys or books listed by other thredUP moms.

When you send a box of pre-loved books to another family, you’ll also receive a Summer Reading Package worth over $40! You’ll get $25 towards book rentals from BookSwim, 30% off an order at Chronicle Books with free shipping and 5 credits (worth $2.99 each) towards eBook rentals at eBookFling.

How does it work?

  • Gather all the books your child no longer reads, and list them by the boxful on thredUP.
  • Sign-up for free and thredUP will send you complimentary empty USPS boxes (if you don’t want to wait, go grab them for free at your local post office).
  • When another mom picks your box of books, thredUP lets you know. thredUP generates the shipping label and scheduldes home pick-up, so you can send books without leaving the house.

It’s even easier than Goodwill and you’ll send your family’s once loved books directly to another child who wants them. Sign up is free via one of the affiliate links I posted. And remember, even if you’re not interested in the book swap, ThredUP is a great program to join to recycle your kids’ things.

The Best Part?

For every box you send on thredUP, you’ll earn additional ‘picks’ allowing you to select boxes of pre-loved kids clothes, toys or books listed by other moms across the country. Pay only $5 + shipping to pick one and have it delivered to your door!
