The Drugstore Games: CVS-A few reminders & beginner tips

I’ve been actively CVS’ing for so long, it’s easy to forget that not everyone else is familiar with all the ins & outs. Here are some tips for beginners.

First, make sure you register your Extra Care card online at CVS dot com. But, do not register it until you are positive that it’s a week that you have deals to do. Because once you register your card, you will probably get a $4 off a $20 purchase coupon, and that coupon can be used BEFORE all your manufacturers’ coupons. So it will sweeten any deals that you have planned. But when they come, they have very short expiration dates, like three days. So don’t sign up until you’re sure you can use it. I hate to see a good coupon go to waste!

Same goes for the CVS Beauty Club–don’t sign up until you have a cosmetics deal lined up. To sign up, they have little slips of paper at the registers in the stores. You just hand them your CVS card and the little thing of paper, and they scan both, and you’re registered! The register should immediately spit out a 10% off cosmetics coupon. *But* it also will have a very short expiration date of about three days. Sign up for it the next time you are ready to purchase cosmetics, because once you’re registered, you get $5 back in Extra Bucks for every $50 you spend in beauty products. I’ve noticed though, that the beauty club takes a few days to catch up in the system. Even if you make a $50 purchase today, your $5 ECB may not show up for a few days. But it’s a very nice surprise when it does!

Next tip-make sure you go online and sign up for the CVS Advisory Panel. This is open to anyone with a CVS card and you can sign up any time. When you do, you’ll occasionally receive surveys. I receive maybe two or three a year. When I do them, I get $5 or $10 in Extra Care Bucks for completing it. Sure, not going to get rich doing it, but an extra $5 or $10 helps build back up those ECBs so I can do my free diaper deals.

If you are not a CVS’er, I highly recommend that you pick one of the drug stores and learn the game. Rite Aid, CVS, or Walgreen’s. Learning to do this at one or more stores is a good way to build up a stockpile or free or almost free merchandise. I rolled the same CVS Extra Bucks, was never without them, from 2006-2009; and that was essential to trimming my budget and my helping to build my diaper stockpile.

I picked CVS and Walgreens as my two stores that I frequently shop, because they are close to my home and I like them both.  I’ve been actively going there for over five years and I’m content there.  Some like Rite Aid or other stores better, I like these two.

Cheap/Free Easter Candy~Walgreen’s and CVS

Looking through my ads after dinner, spotted a few deals-

CVS-has select Mars company candy on sale for $0.99. Print your $2 off 2 coupon here, and print 2 of them=4 for free! Or, look for the $1 off 2 coupon from 3/20 RP.

CVS-also has a Buy 2, get 1 free on select Mars items. There is a coupon coming out tomorrow for Buy 2, Get 1. Just thinking about it makes my head explode, but I think what will happen is-for every set of 3 you buy, you’ll pay for one. This same coupon was in 3/13 inserts.

The Walgreen’s deal involves the Snickers eggs. I’m assuming these are very similar to the Snickers Nutcrackers that were out at Christmas time. I had dozens of them, gave them all away to an uncle that really likes Snickers. On sale for $0.29. Coupon from 3/20 is for $1 off 2. **Since this is a mfr coupon, if you don’t hit $1, it will beep and cause problems. So you’ll have to get at least four at $1.16 for every coupon that you have, to not have problems. But, like I said, I did it at Christmas time and as long as you have enough of them to not create any overage, you’ll be fine.

Now, the only question is, will the Avondale Walgreen’s have them? They had lots and lots of the Nutcrackers, but with this new “no ordering” thing, who knows!

Saturday errand picks

Today is a day that Dollar General is offering a $5 off $25. I’m going to try to find time to get there.

Of course, if you’re local and an earlybird, join us at the Kennett Square McDonald’s at 8 for the coupon swap.

Hmm, I posted lots of great deals last week, scroll through the old posts in case you missed them–Superfresh $1 items are a good deal, I’m hitting the dairy stuff. Peebles has printables if you want to update your spring wardrobe.

CVS-the Allegra deal is a “don’t miss deal” if you’re rolling Extra Bucks. The Landenberg store now has an entire end cap of it.

Walgreen’s-last day of the Almay deal I posted earlier in the week. Easy opportunity to get free makeup.

Any Sunday must-do deals? YES!

Sorry I didn’t get to my “Saturday errand picks this morning,” I know that they are frequently some of my more popular posts. I was just too frazzled trying to get to the coupon swap at 8 and then the Blogger Expo at 10.

For new readers-what makes a must-do deal for me on a Sunday? Well, either it’s a freebie or moneymaker deal that is going to be really hot, and I expect the stores to run out of merchandise. Or, it’s a deal that although totally legit, is just a little too-good-to-be-true and I’m afraid the stores will pull it.

Tomorrow, I think the only must-do deal would be the Allegra at CVS. It’s $6.99 with $6.99 back in Extra Care Bucks. If you have the $2 printable coupon from Smartsource, you have a chance to increase your Extra Care Bucks by $2. I decreased my Extra Bucks last week by $13, so I am definitely on the hunt for ways to increase them. If the printable is no longer working, check your 3/7 inserts. But, I still don’t think that I’ll get up early and try to get this, although I would expect stores to run out of it. Hopefully not.

Another hot deal will be the Almay deal at Walgreen’s. First, there was a $2 coupon in the 3/6 inserts. Next, there’s a $2 Walgreen’s Store Coupon in the Spring Beauty Guide booklet. I haven’t seen these, check in & around the beauty registers. I only looked for them at the Penn Green Road/Avondale store. A store coupon can be stacked with a mfr coupon. And….Almay is 30% off and each Almay product will generate $5 in Register Rewards!

Remember, Walgreen’s Register Rewards deals WILL NOT STACK. If you get three products in one purchase, you will only get ONE $5 RR. You must buy them separately. And they WILL NOT roll! You cannot use a $5 RR to pay for the next Almay item–your $5 RR WILL NOT print if you do.

Nevertheless, this is a must do deal for me. I have several of those coupons, and with the sale, even if I can’t find the Walgreen’s coupon, I see it as an opportunity to spend much less than $5 to get one Almay item + a $5 RR. And, you all know what I’ll use that for……….diapers!

Another reason I like to wait and not necessarily run out on a Sunday-I like to check hotcouponworld and some of the other blogs, and get the word from the street. Which deals are not working, which deals have better limits than what was published, secret hidden deals, clearance finds, stuff like that. I let others go out on Sundays and hit the pharmacies. Then I look for what else I may want to do and it saves me another trip. But the weather is nicer, the days are longer, it’s not so cold………..I am going to hit the stores tomorrow morning. Look for me! And I hope that the Landenberg store has fixed their magic card scanner/coupon printer-it’s been broken all week!
