Homemade Veggie Wash

homemade veggie wash

I know that you have to wash your fruits and veggies.  I try to always soak them/wash them in the sink but this is a much easier way:  Veggie/Fruit Wash!  Nope I am not talking about the super expensive stuff in the stores.  I am talking about the stuff you can make for just a little bit of your hard earned cash.

You’ll need vinegar and an empty spray bottle. I used apple cider vinegar, but white distilled also work.  I found my spray bottle for $1 at the dollar store. Love deals like that.

Pour in about 1/2 cup of vinegar and fill the rest with water. Shake it up. Spray on your fruits and veggies then rinse!  You are all set!

Here’s the cost breakdown (based on prices in my local store):

Store bought:
1 16 oz. bottle of veggie wash: $9.92

Homemade:
1 empty spray bottle: $1
1/2 cup of organic apple cider vinegar (one bottle is $4.20): $0.50
Total: $1.50

How to Avoid Ice Cream Freezer Burn- Money Saving Tips

ice cream

Don’t you just hate when your freezer makes that horrible icy layer on top of your yummy ice cream?  Here is a way you can prevent ice cream freezer burn and save money by not having to trow out your yummy frozen treat.

Well… here’s a great simple way to avoid that funky ice cream drama and all you’ll need is a small piece of saran wrap!

After you dish out your ice cream… just place a small piece of saran wrap right on top of the ice cream.

Push down to flatten it against the ice cream… then put the lid back on before you pop it back into the freezer.  There you have it!  Frost free ice cream!  This is an awesome trick and will keep your ice cream from getting that icy layer for months!

Homemade Jack Daniel’s BBQ Sauce

BBQ SAuce

I love homemade BBQ sauce!  This is a recipe we recently tried and it was amazing!  I am considering making a few batches and canning it for gifts!

What you’ll need

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 cup diced onion
  • 1/3 cup Jack Daniels (optional)
  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 16-ounce glass jar

How to make it

  1. Heat the oil in a medium saucepan over medium low heat. Add the onion to the pan and let it cook for a few minutes, stirring occasionally, until the pieces soften. This is a really important step or it will affect the flavor
  2. Add the remaining ingredients and stir until well blended.
  3. Simmer the sauce for 15 minutes or so, stirring occasionally.
  4. Remove the pan from the heat and allow the sauce to cool.
  5. Pour the sauce into the jar and screw on the lid. Store the sauce in the refrigerator until you’re ready to use it.
