DIY: Microwave “Easy Clean”

I hate cleaning my microwave. That is probably why it gets way dirtier than any microwave should ever be. It’s just such a pain to clean and if you ever read the instructions there is a list of “don’ts”. You can’t spray anything in there, etc. so what’s a girl to do when soap just isn’t cutting it?2 ingredients to the rescue –

Lemons

Water

Really! Here goes! Oh, and you can check the little boxes off to create an easy printable to keep with your recipes or wherever you wish. Once you check everything off, go to print checklist and there you have it – nice and easy.

Lemon Water – Microwave cleaner
Grab a glass bowl
Fill it half full with water
Throw in 4-5 slices of lemon (around 1/2 lemon)
Put in microwave for 2-5 minutes
Get a rag or paper towel and start wiping
Put back in microwave and repeat steps until microwave is clean.
I then pour the hot lemon water over the glass plate (in the sink) and scrub if need be.

Occasionally I still have a few tough spots to scrub but generally it is so much easier and it really doesn’t cost that much.

My shiny clean microwave!

Review: Brave *May Have Spoilers*

Do you know what movie is coming to theaters today? We had the opportunity to attend a pre-screening of Disney: Pixar’s  ‘Brave’.  Check out the link for a great trailer. This has been a long awaited movie in our family and the kids were disappointed I only had 2 passes so they couldn’t go. In the end it was better that way.

The movie ‘Brave’ is about a Scottish princess who prefers to be outdoors rather than to be the “perfect princess” learning to run a household, or as her mother, kind of helping make sure the king stays on track.  I thought it was a refreshing story change up from your traditional Disney Princess movie and I liked the reminder that as parents sometimes we need to stop and listen just as our kids need to stop and listen to what we are saying. Princess Merida is everything an uncivilized father could want while everything a proper mother of those days tries to change. Of course, in the end it all works out as both learn life lessons.

I felt the movie was geared more for an older age.  My 9 year old would be okay going to it except for brief animated cartoon bum nudity in two spots. Yeah, I never thought I would say that about a kid’s movie and I was disappointed they felt the need to include it.  Sure, it was funny, but it was so unnecessary. Also, if you have kids who scare easily it starts out with a ginormous bear that was a little scary even for me. You see the bear again several times through out the story line. My 6 year old and 4 year old would not be able to handle it.

I would advise caution because of those reasons. Other than that it was a cute story and I loved this new princess. She was fun and bold and wild. As much as I love the Disney Princesses, Princess Merida is definitely my favorite.

Savings Challenge: Stockpile Meals

My next 30 days are going  to be spent trying to “eat away” our stockpile. We will hopefully be moving soon and even though it completely goes against my “think ahead” personality, I want to get our stockpile down and start fresh when we move. It’s a bit scary for me but at the same time, a great challenge.

Want  to try a menu plan that involves eating from your stockpile for a week and seeing how little you an spend in groceries? We can start  a “stockpile meals” challenge on Sunday. Reply  to this post if you are interested.  Let’s see how little money we can put out on next week’s groceries!!

This week isn’t necessarily a healthy example for us because we have had to throw together quite a few meals but here is what our stockpile meals looked like so far this week –

Monday -curried couscous and steamed broccoli

Tuesday -pizza and chips

Wednesday -pasta with sauce and cheese

Thursday –  ramen noodle veggie stirfry

We have eaten homemade granola most breakfasts. We have had smoothies and lots of veggies for lunch.

I am using up vegetables I purchased last Wednesday plus a 2# bag of baby carrots that cost $2.78 and the rest is stockpile food. Yesterday I did get the kids ice cream and me a kids meal from chick fila but that was with a gift card.

I also bought 1 gallon milk, 1 pt. cream, 1 pt. half and half, 1 pt. fresh yogurt,  2 cucumbers, and 2 dozen eggs. I spent $15.30 on groceries this week. Next week I have a dairy review to do so I will be able to save with FREE milk. I will have to buy more veggies and fruits though because I am not willing to sacrifice healthy eating to save even more.
