I had the best informational lunch at Giant today! I am so excited to share this with you, I’ll try to be as brief as possible, while still giving you all the information.
Ok, so Giant has a division called Peapod, that delivers groceries. It’s in other cities (and I’ve heard great things about it from moms on hotcouponworld) and it’s coming to Philly. Right now three counties can get it—Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia county. If you are not in one of those areas, go to the Peapod website anyway, and put your zip code in where it asks for it. If enough people in your area do this, it will get to your area faster!
Honestly, my initial thought was, “Why would a supercouponer like me want to get delivered groceries? I’d lose all control over what I choose, and coupons, and so on.” But here are the great things about Peapod:
- ·You can use coupons. You just give them to the delivery person and they are then subtracted from your bill. Your credit card isn’t charged until AFTER your things are delivered.
- ·Minimum $60 purchase. Delivery fees are scaled down as you buy more, or, you can choose cheaper and greener delivery periods.
- ·You don’t have to be home, they will leave it on a porch or something.
- ·Once you set up your online account for this, you can set up regular shopping lists for the items you purchase all the time.
- ·All Giant shopper card policies will apply—they’ll track purchases for gas points, Upromise and all that other stuff.
- ·When shopping online and looking at the items, you can sort the categories many different ways. One of the options is to sort by “unit price” which will give you a true comparison of how one item compares to another.
- ·All items come from a separate warehouse, not an actual Giant store. So they won’t have quite as many items as a store, but certainly enough. The one area that this is most noticeable is fresh bakery.
- ·You can get a text notification when your items are coming.
- Another good thing–you can purchase gift cards! You can see them all on the site. But with this $20 discount code I’m giving you, pick up a Gift Card for the holidays or as a treat to yourself.
I thought of something else-husbands! I don’t know about you, but every week I ask my husband what he wants me to get. He says “nothing.” Then, each day he manages to find one item not in our pantry, that he wants. With Peapod, we can start a list together, add things to it together as we think of them, then finalize it for delivery. I think we’re going to save money by sticking to the list, while having the convenience, and decreasing the likelihood that we’ll forget something. I can look at a recipe and click around with the recipe in my hand, no more forgotten items!
Honestly, when this gets out to Chester County, I see myself using it. Weekly. Seriously, why not? I won’t have to drag my kids into the store, I can do it on my own time. I can start a shopping cart and then get back to it when I have time. I won’t be tempted by impulse purchases that I see. If I find other “must do” deals of freebies or supercheaps, I can still go out and do those. I think this will be even better for that, because if I am going to a store for just a particular offer, I’ll be able to focus on that better. It’s very tough to figure out sale prices, catalinas, and all that other stuff if you’re also trying to do your weekly trip.
Other great ideas I heard from a mom who was there: Is your kid’s birthday coming up? Order cupcakes from Peapod, and have them delivered directly to the school! How convenient is that? Working moms—do your “grocery shopping” on your lunch break at work, and save yourself some valuable time on your days off. Imagine, getting up on a Saturday morning and having everything delivered to you, instead of going out & doing it.
The best part–here’s a code: BLOGPHL. That will get you $20 off your first order and FREE delivery for 60 days! I cannot wait to use this. Everyone in Chester county, please go to their site and put in your zip, see if we can get them out here faster!

Acme used to do this but you couldn’t use coupons. I still saved money because I ordered ONLY what I wanted, no impulse purchases!
I’ve heard good things about this too. Not available for me either yet, but I put in my zip. Taking 2 kids to the store just about does me in. Anything that helps me avoid that is big on my list!
I am really looking foward to this!
